Endoscopic Drainage of Supero-lateral Subperiosteal Orbital Abscess: An Alternative Approach to Frontal Sinusitis

Year 2014, Volume: 19 Issue: 4, 194 - 197, 23.03.2015

Abstract

Subperiosteal abscess (SPA) complicating sinusitis is commonly located lateral to the lamina papyracea. The thin lamina papyracea allows easy spread of infection from ethmoid sinus into subperiosteal space. Superolateral or superior located SPA is rare and traditionally are drained by open approach. We report a 56-year-old man with right SPA located in the supero-lateral orbital roof secondary to frontal sinusitis successfully drained endoscopically avoiding additional external skin incision and achieve a complete evacuation of abscess without evidence of recurrence on follow up at 1 year.
