Validity and Reliability Study of the Social-Emotional Assets and Resiliency Scale for Preschool (SEARS-Pre)

Abstract

This paper deals with the process and findings of the reliability and validity study of the Social-Emotional Assets and Resiliency Scale for Preschool (SEARS-Pre) for preschool children in Turkey. The sample of the study consists of children aged 36-72 months and preschool teachers selected by cluster sampling from public preschool education institutions located in Selçuklu, Meram, and Karatay districts of Konya province of Turkey. A total of 200 preschool teachers completed the SEARS-Pre for 497 children aged 36-72 months. The SEARS-Pre analyses were made via Lisrel 5.3 and SPSS 22. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was conducted to verify the factor structure of the SEARS-Pre. The CFA results confirmed the three-factor structure of the scale consisting of the subdimensions of Self-regulation/Social competence, Emotion knowledge/Expression, and Empathy/Responsibility. The fit indices for the factor structure of the scale were found to be at acceptable levels. For the reliability of the scale, the Cronbach's alpha coefficients were calculated to be .94 for the Self-regulation/Social competence subdimension, .90 for the Emotion knowledge/Expression subdimension, and .91 for the Empathy/Responsibility subdimension. The Spearman-Brown coefficient, another value calculated for reliability, was found to be .92 for Self-regulation/Social competence, .92 for Emotion knowledge/Expression, and .87 for Empathy/Responsibility. Based on all these results, the study concludes that the SEARS-Pre is a valid and reliable measurement tool for assessing the social-emotional assets and resilience of preschool children aged 36-72 months in Turkey.

Okul Öncesi Dönem İçin Sosyal-Duygusal Kazanımlar ve Yılmazlık Ölçeği’nin (Sear-Pre) Geçerlik Güvenirlik Çalışması

Abstract

Bu araştırma “Social-Emotional Assets and Resiliency Scale for Preschool (SEARS-Pre) (Okul Öncesi Dönem İçin Sosyal-Duygusal Kazanımlar ve Yılmazlık Ölçeği) ölçeğinin Türkiye’deki okul öncesi dönem çocukları için geçerlik-güvenirlik çalışması ile ilgili süreç ve bulguları içermektedir. Araştırmanın örneklemini Konya il merkezine bağlı Selçuklu, Meram ve Karatay ilçelerinden resmi okul öncesi eğitim kurumlarından küme örnekleme yolu ile seçilen okul öncesi öğretmenleri ve 36-72 ay çocuklar oluşturmaktadır. Toplam 200 okul öncesi öğretmeni 36-72 ay arası 497 çocuk için Okul Öncesi Dönem İçin Sosyal-Duygusal Kazanımlar ve Yılmazlık Ölçeği’ni doldurmuşlardır. Okul Öncesi Dönem İçin Sosyal-Duygusal Kazanımlar ve Yılmazlık Ölçeği’nin analizi için Lisrel 5.3 programı ve SPSS 22. Paket programı kullanılmıştır. Okul Öncesi Dönem İçin Sosyal-Duygusal Kazanımlar ve Yılmazlık Ölçeği’nin faktör yapısını doğrulamak için doğrulayıcı faktör analizi yapılmıştır. Yapılan doğrulayıcı faktör analizi sonucunda ölçeğin Öz-düzenleme/Sosyal Yeterlilik, Duyguları Anlama/Açıklama ve Empati/Sorumluluk alt boyutlarından oluşan üç faktörlü yapısı doğrulanmıştır. Ölçeğin faktör yapısı için uyum indeksleri incelendiğinde, uyum indekslerinin kabul edilebilir düzeyde olduğu görülmektedir. Ölçeğin güvenirliği için hesaplanan Cronbach Alpha katsayısı sonucunda Öz-düzenleme/Sosyal Yeterlilik alt boyutu için .94, Duyguları Anlama/Açıklama alt boyutu için .90 ve Empati/Sorumluluk alt boyutunda .91 olarak bulunmuştur. Ölçek güvenirliği için hesaplanan bir diğer değer olan Spearman Brown katsayısı Öz-düzenleme/Sosyal Yeterlilik alt boyutu için .92, Duyguları Anlama/Açıklama alt boyutu için .92 ve Empati/Sorumluluk al boyutu için .87 olarak bulunmuştur. Bu sonuçlardan yola çıkılarak Okul Öncesi Dönem İçin Sosyal-Duygusal Kazanımlar ve Yılmazlık Ölçeği (SEARS-Pre)’nin Türkiye’deki 36-72 aylık okul öncesi dönem çocuklarının sahip oldukları sosyal-duygusal koruyucu faktörleri ve yılmazlığı değerlendiren geçerli ve güvenilir bir ölçme aracı olduğu sonucuna varılmıştır.
