Solar energy is a renewable form of energy with global reach and offers the potential to meet the global energy needs if properly harnessed. The major challenge to the technology of this energy source, however, has been low capacity factor and susceptibility to local weather conditions. The narratives are, however, changing due to ongoing studies that are leading to advancements in its technology. Although, there are several literatures on technological advances on solar photovoltaics, most of them have always concentrated only along a single front. The studies are along new forms and applications, the development of new materials and cell structures, and the deployment of Smart technology and artificial intelligence, and provides a handy platform for quick reference and guide to interested scholars on solar photovoltaic technology. The challenges of these new technologies and mitigation strategies were stated, and comparative performance indicators were provided. Despite a few challenges, these recent technological advances have led to improvements in performance and a better way to predict and manage power generation in relation to the local prevailing weather conditions.</p>
