Abstract

THE EFFECT OF WORK STRESS ON NEUROPLASTICITY OF THE EMPLOYEES

Year 2025, Volume: 39 Issue: 2, 524 - 542, 30.06.2025

Abstract

Neuroplasticity, which refers to the brain's ability to self-renew and self-regulate, is the result of communication between neurons. It is known that when this communication between neurons can be established, new networks are formed or existing networks are strengthened, whereas when it cannot be established, existing networks weaken or disappear. Accordingly, factors such as remembering and learning strengthen the connection between neurons and have a positive effect on an individual's neuroplasticity, while factors such as ageing and stress weaken the connection between neurons and have a negative effect on an individual's neuroplasticity. The duration and level of stress also affect this communication between neurons. Thus, while short-term stress does not cause a significant change in neuroplasticity, long-term stress causes impairments in the brain's cognitive function by weakening the connection between neurons and affecting the level of neuroplasticity. As a result of this effect, it is known that not only cognitive skills such as remembering, learning and concentration are affected but also motor skills such as problem solving and generating solutions, which play an essential role in business life. Given that working life is the area where individuals are most exposed to stress, it is important to investigate the consequences of this situation for employees. In this context, the aim of this study is to examine the effects of job stress on employees' neuroplasticity in a conceptual framework and to review the results of studies on this topic.
