Türkiye Cumhuriyeti’ni kültürle temellendiren Atatürk, kültür politikalarıkapsamında sanata ayrı bir önem vermiş, müzik, tiyatro ve sinema gibi sanatdallarının yanı sıra mimari ve şehircilik çalışmalarıyla da yakından ilgilenmiştir. Ankara, 1930’larda şehirlerin çağdaş bir niteliğe kavuşması amacıyla biryandan şehir planları yaptırırken diğer yandan da ulusal mimariyi oluşturmaçabası içerisine girmiştir. 1930’larda planlanmaya çalışılan şehirlerin başındaİstanbul gelmiş ve bu şehrin imar planı ünlü Fransız plancı Henri Prost’ayaptırılmıştır. Prost planı, İstanbul’da gerçek anlamda uygulanan ilk ve enuzun süreli uygulama olarak tarihe geçmiştir. Fakat söz konusu planın hazırlık ve uygulama safhasında karşılaşılan problemler nedeniyle hem Prost hemde planı dönemin basınında uzun süre şiddetle tartışılmıştır.
Atatürk, refurbishing the foundation of the Turkish Republic with culture,gave special importance to arts in his cultural policies; thus, got interestedclosely in architecture and city planning as well as such branches of arts asmusic, theatre and cinema. While Ankara, one the one hand, striving for amodern city planning, on the other hand, it struggled to form a nationalarchitecture. In the 1930s, the priority in city planning was given to İstanbul; therefore, the development plan of city vvas granted to Henry Prost.The Prost plan went down in history as the first and the longest-term application in the literal sense. However, due to the problems encounteredin the preparation and application stages of the plan, both Prost and hisplan were criticised harshly for a long time in the press of the period.
