The 20th century has been the scene of wide ranging and rapid changes all over the world. The developments in science and technology after the Industrial Revolution and their social and spatial results have reshaped the production and consumption relations in the world. Cities are the places where the traces of these changes have been seen most obviously. As the results of the Industrial Revolution the population and the number of the cities has increased, the urban area has grown and the social stratification and division of labor have been re-shaped. While the economic relations have been re-established, some new issues such as the planning and organizing of the urban area have evolved and developed in different scale, technic and content from the beginning to the end of the 20th century. This process has made direct or indirect effects and created consequences on Turkey’s urbanization experience as well.This study aims to present a review of the urbanization dynamics in the world and Turkey in the 20th century through a looking back from the first quarter of 21st century. The developments within the post-industrial revolution era and their consequences on cities and urbanization process are presented in the study at first. Then, the urbanization process experienced in the 20th century in Turkey is summarized through the Turkey's own dynamics. The paper compiles the urbanization dynamics of the 20th century through the origins of the change in urban areas after the Industrial Revolution and summarizes the transformation of policies and planning approaches to urban space in different periods of the 20th century.
20. yüzyıl tüm Dünya’da her açıdan geniş çaplı ve hızlı değişimlere sahne olmuştur. Sanayi Devrimi sonrasında bilim ve teknoloji alanında yaşanan gelişmeler ve bunların sosyal ve mekânsal sonuçları, tüm dünyada üretim ve tüketim ilişkilerini yeniden şekillendirmiştir. Kentler bu değişimlerin izlerinin en açık göründüğü yerler olmuştur. Sanayileşmeye bağlı olarak nüfus hızla artmış, kent sayısı ve kentsel alan büyümüş, kentlerde toplumsal katmanlaşma ve işbölümü yeniden oluşmuştur. Bu süreçte kentsel alanda ekonomik ilişkiler yeniden kurulurken, kentsel mekânın planlanması ve düzenlenmesi gibi konular da yüzyılın başından sonuna kadar farklı ölçek, teknik ve içerikte ele alınmıştır. Bu gelişmeler, doğrudan ya da dolaylı Türkiye’de de etkilerini ve sonuçlarını göstermiş; Dünya’daki ekonomik politikalar ve toplumsal niteliklerde görülen değişim Türkiye kentleşmesini etkilemiştir.Bu çalışma, 21. yüzyılın ilk çeyreğini tamamlamak üzere olduğumuz dönemde, geride bıraktığımız yüzyılda Dünya’da ve Türkiye’de ortaya çıkan kentleşme dinamiklerinin bütüncül bir bakışla derlenmesini amaçlamaktadır. Çalışmada önce Sanayi Devrimi sonrasında yaşanan gelişmeler ve bunların kentler ve kentleşme süreci üzerindeki sonuçlarına değinilecek, sonrasında Türkiye’deki 20. yüzyılda yaşanan kentleşme süreci Türkiye’nin kendine özgü dinamikleri ile birlikte özetlenecektir. Makalede, Dünya’da ve Türkiye’deki kentleşme dinamiklerinin kentsel politika ve planlama yaklaşımları üzerinde yarattığı dönüşüm 20. yüzyıl gelişme evreleri içinde özetlenecektir.
