An Examination on the Similarities Between Ecosocialism and Sustainable Development Goals

Year 2023, Volume: 19 Issue: 1, 230 - 245, 27.06.2023

Abstract

Population growth, urbanization, industrialization, a growth model based on production and consumption, and the intense use of fossil fuels to meet energy needs have led to environmental problems. Solving the environmental problems met today requires the establishment of economic and social structures compatible with the environment. At this point, ecosocialism, which brings together ecology and socialism, offers a wide range of ideas in the combat against environmental problems such as climate change, air, water, waste and soil pollution. Ecosocialism, which emerged in the 1970s in the context of thoughts that the profit-oriented understanding of capitalism transforms the relationship between human and nature to the detriment of the environment, proposes a transition to an ecosocialist society and economic structure in which equality, justice and access to basic needs are essential in the solution of environmental problems. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), on the other hand, provide a road map for building an environmentally compatible social and economic structure between 2015 and 2030. This study aims to reveal the similarities between the economic and social structures that ecosocialism and SDGs try to achieve in harmony with the environment. Within the scope of the study, firstly, the idea of ecosocialism and the SDGs were examined, then it was examined whether there are common points between the ecosocialist society and SDGs and the desired results. As a result of this examination, it has been determined that there are methodological and practical differences between ecosocialism and the SDGs, yet there are similarities between the environment to be achieved and the compatible social structure.

Ekososyalizm ve Sürdürülebilir Kalkınma Amaçları Arasındaki Benzerlikler Üzerine Bir İnceleme

Year 2023, Volume: 19 Issue: 1, 230 - 245, 27.06.2023
