Abstract

This study was conducted to determine the psychosocial care competence levels of nurses working in different clinical units. The study utilized a descriptive and cross-sectional design. The sample consisted of 312 nurses working in internal medicine, surgical, and intensive care units of a university hospital. Data were collected using the Sociodemographic Data Form and the Psychosocial Care Competence Self-Assessment Scale. The analysis revealed that the nurses’ total mean score on the Psychosocial Care Competence Scale was 63.73 ± 13.21, indicating a moderate level of competence. The sub-dimension mean scores were as follows: Symptom Identification (18.31 ± 4.19), Use of Knowledge (18.22 ± 4.12), Intervention (13.45 ± 3.16), and Diagnosis (13.63 ± 3.23). Nurses working in surgical and intensive care units demonstrated significantly higher psychosocial care competence scores than those working in internal medicine and palliative care units (p<0.05). It was determined that the psychosocial care competence levels of nurses varied depending on the unit they worked in, their educational status, and whether they had received psychosocial care training. The findings emphasize the importance of integrating psychosocial care training into nursing education and continuous professional development programs.
