Trendelenburg’s Kant: The Neglected Alternative

Abstract

The present work discusses a debate that deeply influenced German philosophy in the 1860s. This debate, which lasted for almost twenty years between Adolf Trendelenburg and Kuno Fischer, is extremely important for the history of philosophy. The disagreement was about the theory of space and time of Kant's Transcendental Aesthetics. Kant treats space and time as a priori forms of intuition. In this respect, they are evaluated as subjective. Trendelenburg points out the limitations of this view in his Logical Investigation in which he proposes to come up with an alternative view. As Kant's staunch commentator, Fischer attempts to defend the official Kantian position against Trendelenburg’s approach. Keeping these aspects in mind I compose this work in two parts: In the first chapter, I introduce Trendelenburg's system of philosophy within a limited framework. In the second, I describe his critique of Kant's theory of intuition in Transcendental Aesthetics and his discussion with Fischer on this very particular subject. After introducing the view of Hermann Cohen, who had involved lately in the discussion, I finally make my own assessment of Trendelenburg's alternative.

TRENDELENBURG'UN KANT'I: İHMAL EDİLMİŞ ALTERNETİF

Abstract

Eldeki çalışmada, Almanca yapılan felsefeye 1860’larda damga vuran bir tartışmadan söz açıyorum. Adolf Trendelenburg ile Kuno Fischer arasında hemen hemen yirmi yıl boyunca süren bu tartışma, felsefe tarihi açısından son derece önemlidir. Uyuşmazlık, Kant’ın Transendental Estetik’inin uzay ve zaman teorisi hakkındadır. Kant burada uzay ve zamanı, görünün a priori formları olarak belirler. Bu açıdan onlar subjektif unsurlardır. Trendelenburg Mantıksal Soruşturmalar adlı eserinde, bu görüşün sınırlılığından yakınır. O, bu konuda alternatif bir görüşe sahiptir. Kant’ın sadık yorumcusu Fischer ise bu görüşe karşı resmi Kantçı pozisyonu korumaya girişir. Bu minvalde eldeki çalışmayı iki bölümden oluşturuyorum: İlkinde Trendelenburg’un felsefe sistemini sınırlı bir çerçeve içinde tanıtıyorum. İkincisindeyse onun Kant’ın Transendental Estetik ortaya koyduğu görü teorisine ilişkin eleştirisini ve bu konuda Fischer ile girdiği tartışmayı anlatıyorum. Tartışmaya sonunda dâhil olan Hermann Cohen’in bakış tarzını gösterdikten sonra, son olarak Trendelenburg’un alternatifi hakkında kendi değerlendirmemi yapıyorum.
