From Universal Thought to Universal Democracy for Spinoza

Abstract

Benedict de Spinoza (1632-1677) was brought up in Jewish culture and studied Hebrew. Over time, he penetrated into Christian culture and learned Latin. In a way, this transition was a transition from local to universal for him. Now he started to look at the facts more holistically: God and nature, creator nature and created nature, me and someone else (human), religion of revelation and natural religion, knowing God and loving God... Approaching the phenomena holistically and universally in the intellectual context eventually reflected on Spinoza's understanding of politics. A universal politics emerged from this point of view. Spinoza described this politics as democracy. When the governed in a democracy became the ruler, a unity was achieved between the ruler and the ruled. The basis of democracy, on the other hand, is power, that is, the element of effort, which is the same as the origin of the state. Power is also the nature of man and God, that is, of universal nature. Accordingly, the concept of power also has an integrating function. God has the right of those under his power. Likewise, the more democratized people become, the more their power will increase, and their rights will increase in parallel. Despite Spinoza's holistic approach, he did not have equality between men and women, and his universal politics did not lead him to cosmopolitanism.

SPİNOZA AÇISINDAN EVRENSEL DÜŞÜNCEDEN EVRENSEL DEMOKRASİYE

Abstract

Benedictus de Spinoza (1632-1677), Yahudi kültüründe yetişti ve İbrance eğitimi gördü. Zamanla Hristiyan kültürünün içine nüfuz etti ve Latince öğrendi. Bu geçiş onun için bir yönüyle yerlilikten evrenselliğe geçişti. Artık olgulara daha bütünsel bakmaya başlamıştı: Tanrı ve doğa, yaratan doğa ve yaratılan doğa, ben ve başkası (insan), vahiy dini ve fıtri din, Tanrı’yı bilmek ve Tanrı’yı sevmek... Düşünsel bağlamda olgulara bütünsel ve evrensel olarak yaklaşmak, neticede Spinoza’nın siyaset anlayışına da yansıdı. Bu bakış açısının doğurduğu bir evrensel siyaset ortaya çıktı. Spinoza bu siyaseti demokrasi olarak niteledi. Demokraside yönetilen yöneten olunca yöneten ve yönetilen arasında bir bütünlük sağlandı. Demokrasinin temeli ise aslında devletin kökeni ile aynı olan güç, yani çaba unsurudur. Güç bunun yanı sıra insan ve Tanrı’nın, yani evrensel doğanın doğasıdır. Güç kavramı buna göre bütünleştiren bir işleve de sahip olmaktadır. Tanrı gücü altındakilerin hakkına sahiptir. Aynı şekilde insanalr ne kadar demokratikleşirlerse, yani çoğalırlarsa, güçlere o kadar artacağından hakları da paralel olarak artış gösterecektir. Spinoza bütünsellik anlayışına rağmen erkek ve kadın arasında eştiği gitmediği gibi, evrensel siyaseti onu kozmopolitizme vardırmadı.
