Bugün Tunceliiline bağlı bir ilçe olan Çemişgezek tarihi süreç içerisinde değişik kültürlereev sahipliği yapmıştır. Osmanlı döneminde din ve etnik köken bakımdan farklıunsurları bünyesinde barındıran Çemişgezek şehri çok kültürlü bir nüfusyapısına sahipti. Şehir merkezinde 16. yüzyılda Müslüman nüfustan daha fazlagayrimüslim nüfus yaşamaktaydı. Ayrıca bu yüzyılda Müslüman ve gayrimüslimlerfarklı mahallelerde kümelenmişlerdi. Ne var ki sonraki dönemlerde değişik inançlaramensup olan bu toplumlar hemen hemen şehrin bütün mahallelerinde bir aradayaşayarak yakın komşuluk ilişkileri kurmuşlardır. Öte taraftan gündelik hayatınönemli merkezlerinden biri olan ticari mekânlarda da Müslüman vegayrimüslimlere ait bir kısım işyerleri yan yana bulunuyordu.Şehirde din veeğitim alanında faaliyet gösteren müessese sayısı 16. yüzyıla nispeten sonrakiyüzyıllarda artmıştır. Bu müesseselerin etrafında kurulan yeni yerleşimbirimleri de ekseriyetle adlarını bu yapılardan almışlardı. Şehirdeki yerleşimalanlarının çoğunluğu bağ, bahçe gibi yeşil alanlarla çevriliydi.Mahallelerdeki evler de genellikle iki katlı olup, genişlikleri ve kullanımalanları farklılık göstermekteydi.
Çemişgezek which is a district connected to the province, Tunceli,has done the honours for the different cultures in the historical process.Çemişgezek which included the different factors in terms of religion and ethnicorigin in Ottoman Period had a multicultural population structure. Morenon-muslims lived in the city center rather than the muslims in 16. Century.Moreover, the muslims and non-muslimscame together in the different counties in the century. However, those communities which had the differentreligions established the closed neighborhood relations as they lived togethernearly in all the counties of city in the following periods . Furthermore, a part of business places belonging to themuslims and non-muslims were near-by-near in the commercial places which areone of the important centers in daily life. The number of institutes which had activity in the religiousand educational fields increased in the city in the following centuries ratherthan the sixteenth century. The new dwelling units which were establishedaround those institutes took generally their name from those structures. Themost of dwelling areas in the city were surrounded with the green fields suchas the vineyards and yards. The housings in the counties were generallytwo-storey houses their width and usage areas were different.
