The Effect of Alcohol on the Acoustic Reflex and Acoustic Trauma

Abstract

Objective: To investigate the effect of alcohol consumption on acoustic reflex, to emphasize that alcohol is a factor which increases acous-tic trauma and to offer new suggestions on the precautions necessary to take in terms of ear health. Materials and Methods: In 30 healthy male adults, values of acoustic reflex threshold at 1000 Hz and 2000 Hz before and 30 and 60 minutes after ethyl alcohol consumption were compared. Then the relationship between the amount of alcohol in the air exhaled at 30 and 60 minutes and the values of acoustic reflex threshold before and after alcohol consumption were statistically evaluated. Results: There was an increase in all the values of acoustic reflex threshold measured at 1000 Hz and 2000 Hz after ethyl alcohol consump-tion compared to those before ethyl alcohol consumption. The increase in the values of acoustic reflex threshold measured at 1000 Hz was statistically not significant. However, the increases in the values of acoustic reflex threshold measured at 2000 Hz were 4.2 dB at 30 minutes and 5.1 dB at 60 minutes and were considered statistically significant. Conclusion: Ethyl alcohol consumption in noisy environment is a factor which potentializes the effect of noise causing acoustic trauma. Therefore, otolaryngologist should question whether the patients consume alcohol in noisy environment and warn them that alcohol consumption in noisy environment is more harmful to ear health.

Etil Alkolün Akustik Refleks ve Akustik Travma Üzerine Etkisi

Abstract

Amaç: Etil alkol tüketiminin akustik refleks üzerindeki etkilerini araştırmak, alkol'ün akustik travmayı arttıran bir faktör olduğunu vurgulamak ve kulak sağlığı açısından gerekli önlemlerin alınması hakkında öneriler geliştirmek. Gereç ve Yöntemler: 30 sağlıklı yetişkin erkekte etil alkol tüketimi öncesi tespit edilen 1000 Hz ve 2000 Hz'deki akustik refleks eşik değerleri ile alkol tüketimi sonrası 30. dk ve 60. dk'da ölçülen akustik refleks eşik değerleri karşılaştırılmış. 30.dk ve 60.dk'da ölçülen solunum havasındaki alkol miktarı ile alkolsüz ve alkollü dönemlerdeki akustik refleks eşik değişiklerinin ilişkisi istatistiksel olarak değerlendirilmiştir. Bulgular: Etil alkol tüketimi sonrası ölçülen akustik refleks eşiklerinin tamamında alkolsüz döneme göre yükselme olmuştur. 1000 Hz'deki akustik refleks eşiklerindeki yükselme istatistiksel olarak anlamlı olmamasına rağmen, özellikle 2000 Hz frekansta akustik refleks eşiklerinde 30.dk'da ortalama 4,2 dB, 60.dk'da 5,1 dB yükselme tespit edilmiştir. 2000 Hz frekanstaki akustik refleks eşiklerindeki yükselmeler istatistiksel olarak anlamlıdır. Sonuç: Gürültülü ortamlarda etil alkol tüketimi, gürültünün akustik travma yapıcı etkisini potansiyalize eden bir faktördür. Bu nedenle kulak burun boğaz hastalıkları hekiminin gürültülü ortamlarda çalışanların alkol tüketimini sorgulaması ve gürültü ile alkol birlikteliğinin daha zararlı olduğu konusunda uyarıda bulunması kulak sağlığı açısından önemlidir.
