IRIS MURDOCH’IN DENİZ DENİZ ADLI ROMANINDAKİ DOĞAYA KAÇIŞ METAFORUNA PLATONİK BİR OKUMA

Abstract

Bu çalışma Murdoch’ın Deniz Deniz adlı romanını; insanın doğaya, daha özelde de denize sığınma metaforu üzerinden değerlendirecektir. Romanın ana kahramanı olan Charles Arrowby Londra’da oyunculuk yapmış ve emeklilik dönemine gelmiş tanınmış bir tiyatro oyuncusudur. Arrowby, emeklilik döneminde oyunculuğu bırakarak İngiltere’nin bir kıyı kasabasına yerleşmeye karar verir. Bu karar romanda bir kopma fikriyle birlikte ve Arrowby’ın iyi arayışının odağında verdiği bir karar olarak yer almaktadır. Kahramanın iyi arayışı doğaya/denize sığınma metaforu ile birlikte karşımıza çıkar. Bu makale, Murdoch’ın ana kahramanının doğaya kaçması, sığınması fikri üzerinden işlediği iyi arayışı fikrinin Platonik bir okumasını yapmayı amaçlamaktadır. Bu okuma da Platon’un Theaitetos (172c-176c) pasajlarında işlediği, bu dünyadaki kötülüklerden kaçma fikriyle bağlantılı olarak Platon için iyinin niteliği ve ulaşılabilirliği üzerinden gerçekleştirilecektir. Dolayısıyla makalenin ana sorusu, Platon için iyinin bu dünyadan kaçarak mı gerçekleştirilebileceğine dair kadim meselenin Murdoch’ın kahramanının şehirden doğaya kaçması örneği çerçevesinde yeniden tartışmaya açılması üzerinden kurgulanmaktadır.

A PLATONIC READING OF THE METAPHOR OF ESCAPE TO NATURE IN IRIS MURDOCH'S NOVEL THE SEA, THE SEA

Abstract

This study will evaluate Murdoch's novel The Sea, The Sea through the metaphor of man's refuge in nature, more specifically in the sea. Charles Arrowby, the main protagonist of the novel, is a well-known theater actor who has worked as an actor in London and has reached his retirement. In his retirement, Arrowby decides to quit acting and settle in a coastal town in England. This decision takes place in the novel with the idea of a rupture and as a decision that Arrowby makes at the center of his search for good. The hero's search for good appears in the metaphor of taking refuge in nature/the sea. This article aims to provide a Platonic reading of Murdoch's idea of the pursuit of the good, which the main protagonist of the novel deals with through the idea of escaping and taking refuge in nature. This reading will be realized through the nature and attainability of the good for Plato in connection with the idea of escaping from the evils of this world, which Plato deals with in Theaitetos (172c-176c) passages. Therefore, the main question of the article is based on the re-discussion of the ancient issue of the nature of the good life for Plato and whether this good can be realized by escaping from this world through the example of Murdoch's hero's escape from the city to nature.
