BONE MINERAL DENSITY AND PHYSICAL FITNESS IN BALLET DANCERS: A CROSS SECTIONAL STUDY

Year 2005, Volume: 10 Issue: 2, 43 - 52, 01.04.2005

Abstract

The
purpose of this study was to compare the spinal and femoral bone mineral
density and physical parameters of women ballet dancers to their age-matched
sedentary counterparts. Thirty-six women ballet dancers (Mean age: 30.8 ± 8.8)
participated in this study. Thirty-four sedentary counterparts (Mean age: 34.6
± 8.6) constituted the sedentary group. BMD was measured with a dual energy
X-ray absorptiometer (DEXA). Body composition, aerobic power, muscular
endurance and flexibility were measured using the skin fold caliper, Bruce
protocol, sit-ups and sit and reach test, respectively. T-test results revealed
significant differences between dancers and non-dancers in total femur BMD,
body fat percentage, body mass index, muscular endurance, flexibility and
aerobic power values (p<0.01). As a conclusion, it can be stated that ballet
dancers had beter BMD and physical parameters compared to controls.

BALERİNLERDE KEMİK MİNERAL YOĞUNLUĞU VE FİZİKSEL UYGUNLUK: KESİTSEL ÇALIŞMA

Year 2005, Volume: 10 Issue: 2, 43 - 52, 01.04.2005
