<p>Objective: Cervical cancer is the second most common type of cancer and the second most common cause of cancer-related deaths in women. Epidemiological studies have shown that human papillomavirus HPV is the major risk factor for cervical cancer. The aim of this study was to determine the presence of HPV DNA and HPV genotypes in cervical samples with the request of HPV DNA test. Material and Method: HPV DNA was investigated by PCR method in servical samples. HPV genotyping was performed by reverse hybridization method. Results: Out of two hundred and fifty cervical samples included in the study, HPV DNA was detected in 48 19.2% samples including 29 11.6% only at high-risk, 12 4.8% only at low-risk and 7 2.8% at high and low risk together. High-risk HPV genotypes HPV 16 and HPV 30’s+50’s were determined as 18.7%and 12.5%respectively. Conclusion: In our study, HPV 16 which is a high-risk type was detected at the highest rate while other types were detected at different rates. Comprehensive studies participating patient/control groups with similar demographic characteristics and using a standard method are needed for determinination of the prevalence of HPV DNA and HPV types and population covered by HPV vaccine in our country</p></trans-abstract>
