ABSTRACT
Natural stones are extensively being used as construction materials. They are generally used in pavements, as cladding and masonry material in walls. The aim of this study is to determine some of the mechanical and physical properties of the ignimbrite rocks of Bitlis-Ahlat region. The parameters used for investigating these properties include compressive strength, water absorption, flexural strength and abrasion loss. The results indicate that the ignimbrite rock should not be used in the construction where flexural and compressive strengths are important and in regions where freeze-thaw effects are substantial. The ignimbrite stone can only be used for decorative cladding purposes.
