Umberto Eco’nun okurun bir metni okuduğu esnada metnin onu nasıl yönlendirdiğini ve okurun hangi süreçlerden geçtiği ile ilgili çalışmaları bulunmaktadır. Bu bağlamda örnek okur kavramı Umberto Eco’nun literatüre kazandırdığı kavramlardan biridir. Eco, örnek okur kavramını Anlatı Ormanlarında Altı Gezinti adlı eserinde orman metaforu üzerinden kurup geliştirir. Eco’ya göre örnek okur bir metni okumaya başladığı esnada bir ormana girmektedir. Dolayısıyla ormanda gezinen örnek okur metnin yazarının bıraktığı ipuçlarını takip etmeye başlar. Bu ipuçları okuru ormanda oyalar ve okur bazen ileri bazen de geri gider. Anlatının derin anlamına ulaştığı anda ise ormandan çıkar. Eco’ya göre bu örnek okur tipi yazarın yaratmaya çalıştığı bir okur tipidir ve bu okur tipi metinle iş birliği içindedir. Örnek okurlar aynı zamanda kurmaca metinlerin bir oyun olduğunu bilen ve oyunda kalmayı bilen kimselerdir. Postmodernist edebiyatın önemli temsilcilerinden olan Orhan Pamuk paradokslarla örülü olan Beyaz Kale romanının başından itibaren kurduğu metaforlar, teknikler ve oyunlarla okurunu ormanda geniş bir gezintiye çıkaran bir yazardır. Dolayısıyla Beyaz Kale postmodernizmin çoğulcu estetiği bağlamında çoklu okuma modellerini mümkün kılan bir anlatıdır. Bu bağlamda bu çalışmada Orhan Pamuk’un Beyaz Kale adlı romanında örnek okurun metindeki ipuçlarından yola çıkarak metni nasıl yorumladığı Umberto Eco’nun yazar ile iş birliğini önceleyen örnek okur kavramı üzerinden incelenecektir.
Umberto Eco has studies on how the text directs the reader while reading it and what processes the reader goes through at this period. In this context, the concept of model reader is one of the concepts that Umberto Eco introduced to literature. Eco established and developed the concept of model reader through the forest metaphor in his work Six Walks in The Fictional Woods. According to the text of Eco, the model reader goes into the forest while s\he starts reading a text. Therefore, the model reader wandering in the forest begins to follow the clues left by the author of the text. These clues keep the reader occupied in the forest, and the reader sometimes goes forward and sometimes backwards. When the reader reaches the deep meaning of the narrative, s\he leaves the forest. According to Eco, this model reader type is a reader type that the author tries to create, and this type of reader cooperates with the text. In addition, model readers are the one who know that fictional texts are a game and who know how to stay in the game.Orhan Pamuk, one of the important exponents of postmodernist literature, is a writer who takes his readers on a journey through the forest with the metaphors, techniques and games he has established from the very beginning of his novel, which is full of paradoxes. Therefore, the White Castle is a novel that enables multiple reading models in the context of the aesthetic pluralism of postmodernism. Within this context, in this study, how the model reader in Pamuk's novel White Castle interprets the text based on the clues in the text will be analyzed through Umberto Eco's concept of model reader, which prioritizes collaboration with the author.
