SIR JAMES PORTER'IN TÜRKİYESİ: TARİHİ VE GELİŞİMİ

Abstract

Osmanlı Devleti tarihi üzerine birçok kitap yazılmıştır. Bu kadim medeniyet dünya çapında bir çok araştırmacı, tarihçi, edebiyatçının ilgisini çekmiştir,bunlardan birisi de İngiltere’nin İstanbul büyükelçisi olarak görev yapan Sir James Porter’dır. İstanbulda 16 yıl kalan Porter, Osmanlı Devletini yakından gözlemleme fırsatı yakalamıştır. Osmanlı Devleti üzerine iki kitap kaleme almıştır. Bu kitaplardan bir tanesi “Sir James Porter’s Turkey:Its History and Progress” (Sir James Porter’ın Türkiyesi. Tarihi ve Gelişimi adlı kitaptır. İncelediğimiz sözkonusu kitap, Osmanlı Devletinin sosyal, politik, ekonomik, hukuk alanlarında Sir James Porter’ın hem öznel düşünce ve gözlemlerini hem tarihi bilgileri sunmaktadır. Kitap değerlendirmesi başlığında incelediğimiz eser, önemli bir tarihsel kaynak olarak göze çarpmaktadır.

Abstract

Many books have been written on the history of the Ottoman Empire. This ancient civilization has attracted attention of many researchers, historians and writers across the world, one of whom was Sir James Porter having served as the British ambassador to Istanbul. Porter, who stayed in Istanbul for 16 years, had the chance to observe the Ottoman Empire closely. He wrote two books on the Ottoman Empire. One of them is “Sir James Porter’s Turkey: Its History and Progress”. The book reviewed presents both Sir James Porter’s subjective thoughts and observations as well as historical facts on the social, political, economic and legal fields of the Ottoman Empire. The work analyzed under book review stands out as an important historical source.
