IMPORTANCE OF DIALYSIS NURSING IN THE NURSING CURRICULUM IN
TURKEY
ABSTRACT
Introduction: The increase in the number of patients receiving
renal failure and dialysis treatment necessitates the diversity of courses
specific for this field of medicine.
Aim: The aim of this study is to investigate the curriculum of
dialysis nursing program in Turkey and its importance.

Methıds:
The study was designed in 2 stages. For the first stage, the population of the
study comprised nursing schools of all the public and private universities in
Turkey (N=119) and the sample of the study comprised nursing schools which the
online course content was accessible (n=21). Online catalogs of the nursing
programs which teaches dialysis nursing were examined for this stage. For the
second stage, class-related opinions of the students who study at a university
and take Dialysis Nursing class were obtained by cross-sectional sampling
method by using “Dialysis Nursing Class Evaluation Form”.
Results: Among the total of 21
universities which the class contents were accessible, it was detected that
%57.14 included renal anatomy-physiology and chronical renal diseases, %52.38
included dialysis team and job definitions, %19.04 included body image and
quality of life of dialysis patients, %66.66 included dialysis treatment in
special cases, %52.38 included psychosocial problems caused by dialysis, %71.42
included nutrition in dialysis and %23.80 included the education of the
dialysis patients and their families in their course content. Types of
dialysis, indications and contraindications, materials used for dialysis,
methods for reaching vessels and peritoneum, acute and chronical complications
of dialysis were included in %100 of the universities. It was detected that
dialysis nursing class contributed to change the perspective of %100 of the
students towards dialysis patients, %100 of the students thought this class was
necessary and there should also be a practice for the class. They also thought
that students who took this class should be provided convenience when applying
for the certificate program. It was detected that %94.11 of the students
thought they would have advantage over their collegues through this class,
%82.35 became interested in being a dialysis nurse, %100 gain information about
the associations about dialysis nursing and their memberships, %100 understood
the importance of the certificate program for dialysis nursin
Conclusion: It was detected that dialysis nursing course is
not included in every university and the course contents differed. When the
student views and the increasing number of
dialysis patients are
considered, it occurs that it is important to provide this course in every
university and create a common language for the course content.
