Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to list the criteria used in the assesstment of cluttering by speech and language therapists in Turkey.
Method: 205 speech and language therapists living in Turkey participated in the study. The experiences and practices of the participants were analyzed with prepared multiple questions.
Findings: It was seen that ,of the criteria which participant speech and language therapists use in the diagnosis of cluttering, the highest ratios were for tachyalia(82,9%),speed of irregular speech (%73,7),no pauses between words ( %67,8),deleting the sounds in words (%66,8),insufficient level of awareness of speech speed(%64,9),inappropriate prosodic patterns(%60),presence of cluttering in family (%60), and fastening speech (%59,5).And the lowest ratios were for visual perceptual problems (%10.7), insufficiency in writing (%21,5),lack of motor coordination(%26,5),Word finding problems (%27,3),bad handwriting (%27,8), and insufficiency of reading (%28,8).Participant speech and language therapists stated that ,of the disorders accompanied by cluttering, the most common ones were stuttering (%70,2),and lack of anttention and presence of hyperactivity disorder (%66,3) and the least ones were Fragile X syndrome (%7,8) and down syndrome (%93,3).
Results: Within the findings obtained as the result of the study, the criteria which the speech and language therapists in Turkey use in the diagnosis of cluttering were listed. It is of high importance that in this respect parameters used by speech and language therapists should be includes in addition to standard tools for multifactorial and in-depth asssesstment.
