Author Guide

The journal is published in Turkish and English. Articles should include Turkish and English summaries. Turkish articles should be based on Turkish Language Society’s Turkish Dictionary and Spelling Dictionary (http://tdk.org.tr). Latin versions of anatomical terms should be used. Terms which are commonly used in daily medical language should be written as pronounced according to Turkish spelling rules.

Articles submitted for publication should be prepared pursuant to Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals created and updated by International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) (http://www.ulakbim.gov.tr/cabim/vt/uvt/tip/).

Istanbul Bilim University Florence Nightingale Medical Journal acknowledges to comply with the ethical standards of the Declaration of Helsinki (http://www.wma.net/en/30publications/10policies/b3/index.html). Therefore, ethics board approval should be obtained and indicated in the Material and Method section in all studies performed on humans. Patients and volunteers included in the study should be informed regarding procedures to be conducted, their approvals should be obtained, and this should be indicated in the article’s Material and Method section. In animal studies, it should be indicated in the article’s Material and Method section that the study was conducted according to the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals (www.nap.edu/catolog/5140.html) and the ethics board approval was obtained from the relevant institution. If required, a copy of the ethics board approval may be requested by the editor from the authors.

Articles need to fully comply with the indicated spelling rules to be put in process instantly. Regarding articles which do not comply with the publication terms, the Editor and Advisory Board of the journal are authorized to return articles to authors for correction, edit, or reject articles.

Submitted articles are first evaluated by the Advisory Board of the journal and Editor. Articles which are considered appropriate by the Advisory Board of the journal and Editor are delivered to three relevant consultants whose names are kept anonymous. An article gets qualified for publication once at least two of these consultants express their positive opinion. The editor is authorized to identify consultants.

Texts should be written in “Arial” character with 1.5 space between lines, 13 point size, and 2 cm margin on both sides of the page. Publication text should be prepared in an IBM compatible computer program (Microsoft Windows, at least Word 98). Page numbers should be indicated on the right lower corner of each page starting from the title page. The main text should not include any information pertaining to author names or their employer institutions.

Copyright transfer form should indicate that the submitted article has not been published in any journal before or submitted to any journal for publication, and the article was submitted to this journal with the approval of all authors. Copyright transfer form should be signed by all authors as listed in the article’s name order and uploaded to online evaluation system with a cover letter during article registration.

Signed cover letter may also be sent by cargo to the address of Istanbul Bilim Üniversitesi, Büyükdere Cad. No: 120, 34394 Esentepe, Şişli, Istanbul or scanned and e-mailed to the address info@istanbulbilim.edu.tr. Signed cover letter should also indicate all authors’ scientific contributions and responsibilities regarding the article, any conflict of interest involving study results and if any, its content, any financial support/contribution from any organization or institution, and if any, the sponsor. Articles which have been previously presented as abstracts may be published provided that location and date are stated.

Abbreviations used in the article should be accepted internationally, expanded at first mention, after which the abbreviation should be written in parenthesis. Then, the abbreviated version should be used throughout the entire text. Article’s Turkish and English titles, and authors’ open names and last names should be written on the title page. Name of the clinic, department/discipline, institute, or organization where the study was conducted should be stated. Title page should also include the name, correspondence address, e-mail, and telephone and fax numbers of the contact person. If the study was previously presented as an abstract in a congress or symposium, it should be indicated on this page.

All article types except for letter to the editor and clinical presentation should include Turkish and English summaries. Usage of abbreviations should be avoided in the summary section as much as possible. Sentences requiring references should not be used as well as sources, figures, tables or citations.

There should be at least three and at most seven keywords in accordance with Index Medicus Medical Subject Headings (MeSH). For keywords, please see the address www.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/MBrowser.html.

Research articles should include Turkish and English titles and summaries. Summaries should comprise of Purpose, Material and Method, Findings, Conclusion, and Keywords and should not exceed 250 words. Main text should include Introduction, Material and Method, Findings, Discussion, Acknowledgements (if any), and References.

Review articles should include Turkish and English titles and summaries. Summary should be prepared as one paragraph, include keywords, and be limited to 100 words. Structured summary is not required.

Case reports should include Turkish and English titles and summaries. Summary should be prepared as one paragraph, include keywords, and be limited to 100 words. Main text should comprise of Introduction, Case Report, Discussion, and References. Introduction and Discussion sections of case reports should be brief.

Short communications should briefly include research data which may have significant contribution to the relevant area. Short communications should have a maximum of 1,500 words and include Turkish and English titles, one paragraph of Turkish and English summaries, and three to seven keywords in Turkish and English. Short communications should include maximum two tables and one figure/graphic/picture. Structured summary is not required.

Letter to the editor section was created to bring criticism to articles previously published in the journal and make a contribution, or convey information which was not or cannot be prepared as an original study. Thus letters to the editor should be brief, not exceeding 1,000 words, and should not include a summary.

Tables, figures, graphics and pictures should be enumerated according to the order they were cited in the text. The place of tables, figures, graphics and pictures in the text should be indicated.

Each table should be prepared on a separate page with 1.5 space between lines. Each table should be given a short title. Explanations should not be made in the title, but in the footnotes. All nonstandard abbreviations should be expanded in the footnotes. The following symbols should be used for footnotes, respectively: *,†,‡,§,||,¶,**,††,‡‡. Authors should make sure that each table is cited in the text.

Figures and graphics should be drawn and photographed professionally, and photographs should be in digital printing quality. Figures and graphics should have 300 dpi resolution in JPEG or TIF format and their image quality should be checked on computer screen before saving.

X-ray, CT, MR films and photographs of other diagnostic imaging and pathological samples may be saved as electronic file in JPEG or GIF format to create high resolution images. Letters, numbers, and symbols on the pictures should be clear and equal in the entire article, and readable even when downsized for publication. Pictures should be comprehensible by themselves as far as possible. If patient(s)’s photograph will be used, patient(s) should not be recognized from the photograph or written consent should be obtained from the patient(s) or their legal guardians.

Starting from a separate page, captions and footnotes for figures, graphics, and pictures should be written with 1.5 space between lines and enumerated showing their corresponding figure. When symbols, arrows, numbers or letters are used to indicate parts of the figure, each should be clearly defined in the footnotes.

If the article includes previously published tables, figures, graphics, or pictures etc., authors should obtain permission from the owner of the right of publication and authors and indicate this accordingly.

REFERENCE FORMAT 

Data and studies which were not published before should not be included in the references section. Studies accepted for publication may be shown as reference indicating “Epub year, month and day”.

Reference numbers should be indicated inside brackets and at the end of the sentence. They should be listed after the text according to their citation order in the text. Names of journals should be abbreviated based on “Index Medicus” and “Ulakbim/Turkish Medical Index”. References should be written according to the below samples.

If the reference is a journal; 

Author(s)’s last name first letter(s) of their name (all authors should be indicated for six or less authors, while only the first six authors should be indicated for articles with more than six authors; “ve ark.” should be used for Turkish references, while “et al.” for foreign references). Title of the article. Shortened name of the journal according to Index Medicus (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/entrez/query.fcgi?db=nlmcatalog). Year; Volume: First and last page number.

If the reference is a journal supplement; 

Author(s)’s last name first letter(s) of their name. Title of the article. Shortened name of the journal according to Index Medicus (www.nlm.nih.gov/tsd/serials/lji.html) Year;Volume (Suppl. number): First and last page number. Example: Mucci E, Jackson SH. Nutritional supplementation in community-dwelling elderly people. Ann Nutr Metab 2008;52(Suppl 1):S33-S7.

If the reference is a book; 

Author(s)’s last name first letter(s) of their name. Name of the book. Edition number. Place of printing: Printing house, Printing year.

If the reference is a section from a book; 

Section author(s)’s last name first letter(s) of their name. Title of section. In: Editor(s)’s last name first letter(s) of their name editor or editors. Name of the book. Edition number. Place of printing: Printing house; Printing year: First and last page number of the section.

Example: Thomas DB, Miller BL. Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. In: Kasper DL, Braunwald E, Fauci AS, editors. Principles of Internal Medicine. 16th ed. New York: McGraw-Hill; 2005. p. 2393-406.

If the reference is an article presented in a meeting;

Author(s)’s last name first letter(s) of their name (all authors should be indicated for six or less authors, while only the first six authors should be indicated for articles with more than six authors; ; “ve ark.” should be used for Turkish references, while “et al.” for foreign references). Title of the article. If any In: Editor(s)’s last name first letter(s) of their name editor or editors. Name of the book. Name of the meeting; Date; Name of the city where the meeting was held, name of the country where the meeting was held. Printing house; Year. First and last page number.

If the reference is an electronically published journal;

Author(s)’s last name first letter(s) of their name (all authors should be indicated for six or less authors, while only the first six authors should be indicated for articles with more than six authors; “ve ark.” should be used for Turkish references, while “et al.” for foreign references). Title of the article. Shortened name of the journal according to Index Medicus Year; Volume: First and last page number. Electronic publishing date year month and day.

Author’s last name first letter of his/her name. Title of the thesis (thesis). Name of the city where the thesis was conducted: Name of the University (if university); Year.
