Bu çalışmada, 1873’te Ethem Paşa ve ekibi tarafından Viyana Uluslararası Sergisi için hazırlanan Usûl-i Mi‘mârî-i Osmânî adlı eser, nostalji kavramı çerçevesinde, kültürel ve ideolojik bir mimari anlatı olarak incelenmiştir. Söz konusu eserin, Osmanlı mimarlığını belgeleyen teknik bir kaynak olmasının yanı sıra, geçmişin seçili unsurlarını temsili bir biçimde yeniden kurgulayan nostaljik bir söylem ürettiği ileri sürülmektedir. Nostalji kavramına ilişkin kuramsal çerçeveyi ise Svetlana Boym’un “yeniden kurucu nostalji” kavramsallaştırması ile Uğur Tanyeli’nin geçmişin seçici biçimde yeniden inşasına vurgu yapan tanımı oluşturmaktadır. Bu teorik çerçeve, eserin yalnızca geçmişe yönelik bir duygu üretim biçimi olarak nostaljiye değil, aynı zamanda Osmanlı mimarlığını ‘öz’ niteliğinde tanımlayan biçimsel öğeleri seçerek belirli bir tarih ve kimlik anlatısı kurmasına da odaklanmayı mümkün kılmıştır. Çalışmanın yöntemi, metin çözümlemesi ve söylem analizini eksen alır. Tarihsel tasvirler, biçimsel repertuvarlar ve karşılaştırmalar üzerinden nostaljik temsiller belirlenmiştir. Analizlerle beraber 16. yüzyıl klasik döneminin Mimar Sinan’ın temsil ettiği ideal üzerinden, Osmanlı mimarlığının “zirve” noktası olarak yeniden tanımlandığı gösterilmiştir. Sonuçta eser, Osmanlı mimarlık kimliğini süreklilik, aidiyet ve direniş kavramları etrafında nostaljik bir şekilde yeniden üreten ideolojik bir kültürel metin olarak değerlendirilmiştir.
This study examines the work titled Usûl-i Mi‘mârî-i Osmânî, prepared by Ethem Pasha and his team for the Vienna International Exhibition in 1873, within the concept of nostalgia, as a cultural and ideological architectural narrative. This study argues that, in addition to being a technical source documenting Ottoman architecture, the work in question produces a nostalgic discourse that represents selected elements of the past in a reimagined form. The theoretical framework of the study regarding the concept of nostalgia is formed by Svetlana Boym's conceptualization of “restorative nostalgia” and Uğur Tanyeli's definition of nostalgia, which emphasizes the selective reconstruction of the past. This theoretical framework allows the study to focus not only on nostalgia as a form of emotion production directed toward the past, but also on the establishment of a specific historical and identity narrative by selecting formal elements that define Ottoman architecture as ‘essential’. The study's research method is based on text and discourse analysis. Nostalgic representations were identified through historical depictions, formal repertoires, and comparisons in the work. The findings show that the text redefined the 16th-century classical period as the “peak” of Ottoman architecture through the ideal represented by Mimar Sinan. Ultimately, the work is evaluated as an ideological cultural production that nostalgically reproduces Ottoman architectural identity around the concepts of continuity, belonging, and resistance.
