<p>The aim of this study is to examine the views of social studies graduate students on academic literacy skills in the context of their graduate education. Phenomenological design was used in this qualitative research study. The study group of the research consisted of eight graduate students, four master&#039;s and four doctoral students, studying in the field of social studies education at six different state universities in Turkey. Participants were determined by maximum diversity sampling method, one of the purposeful sampling methods. The data obtained through a semi-structured interview form were analysed with the content analysis technique by adopting an inductive approach in MAXQDA qualitative analysis programme. The research process was planned by considering the principles of credibility, transferability, consistency and confirmability. As a result of the research, all of the graduate students emphasised that academic literacy skills are necessary and it was stated that individuals who are academically literate should have characteristics such as critical thinking, curiosity, academic reading and writing, problem solving, effective listening, access to accurate information, scientific ethics, empathy, digital literacy, environmental literacy, sensitivity, decision making, following the literature, knowing the steps of research and competence in foreign language. As a result of the research, it was revealed that the participants experienced problems arising from various reasons such as lecturers, students, research process and natural disasters during the postgraduate education process and that these problems constitute an obstacle to the development of academic literacy skills. The participants made suggestions for policy makers, curricula, teaching staff and graduate students regarding the problems they encountered in the postgraduate education process.</p></trans-abstract>
