During the Ottoman period, cities developed around religious and commercial centers, and in the early period, these religious centers were formed by great mosques (ulu cami). Opened for worship at the beginning of the 15th century, the Old Mosque (Eski Cami) was constructed as the great mosque of Edirne with its multi-support and multi-domed plan. In the process of Edirne becoming a Turkish city, the Old Mosque and the bedesten built to generate income for the mosque constituted the religious and commercial core of the city, and urban development took shape around these centers. Indeed, structures such as the Üç Şerefeli Mosque and the Selimiye Mosque, which were built after the Old Mosque, became symbols of Edirne. In addition, madrasas, marketplaces, inns, baths, and caravanserais were also located in close proximity to this mosque. As one of the rare examples of great mosques and a significant element in the urban development of Edirne, the Old Mosque was adversely affected by fires, earthquakes, and wars that occurred in the city, and it has survived to the present day through various repairs carried out in different periods. This study aims to present the restoration interventions carried out on the Old Mosque from the Ottoman period to this day. Within the scope of the research, a review of the relevant literature was conducted; archival documents from the Edirne Regional Directorate of Foundations and the Edirne Regional Council for the Conservation of Cultural Heritage were examined; and recent restoration practices were documented through on-site observations and photographic records.The study defines the historical background and architectural characteristics of the building, addresses deterioration and restoration processes within a historical framework, and seeks to evaluate the transformation and development of conservation approaches in Türkiye through the case of the Old Mosque.
Osmanlı Dönemi’nde kentler dinî ve ticari nitelikli merkezlerin etrafında gelişmiş, erken dönemde dinî merkezleri ulu camiler oluşturmuştur. 15. yüzyılın başında ibadete açılan Eski Cami, çok ayaklı ve çok kubbeli planıyla Edirne’nin ulu camisi olarak inşa edilmiştir. Edirne’nin Türk şehri olma sürecinde Eski Cami ve camiye gelir sağlamak amacıyla inşa edilen bedesten, kentin dinî ve ticari merkezini oluşturmuş; kent, bu merkezler etrafında gelişmiştir. Nitekim Eski Cami’den sonra inşa edilen Üç Şerefeli Cami ve Selimiye Camii gibi yapılar, Edirne’nin simgesi hâline gelmiş, bunların yanı sıra medreseler, kapanlar, hanlar, hamamlar ve kervansaraylar da bu caminin yakınında konumlandırılmıştır. Edirne’nin kentsel gelişiminde etkili olan ve ulu camilerin sayılı örneklerinden birini teşkil eden Eski Cami, kentte meydana gelen yangın, deprem ve savaşlardan olumsuz etkilenmiş, farklı dönemlerde gerçekleştirilen onarımlar sayesinde günümüze ulaşmıştır.Bu çalışmanın temel amacı, Eski Cami’nin Osmanlı Dönemi’nden günümüze kadar geçirdiği onarım ve restorasyon uygulamalarını kronolojik ve analitik bir yaklaşımla incelemek; bu müdahaleleri çağdaş koruma kuramı ve uluslararası koruma ilkeleri bağlamında değerlendirmek ve yapının güncel koruma sorunlarını bilimsel bir perspektifle ortaya koymaktır. Çalışmada alan yazını taraması yapılmış, Edirne Vakıflar Bölge Müdürlüğü ve Edirne Kültür Varlıklarını Koruma Bölge Kurulu Müdürlüğü arşiv belgeleri incelenmiş; son yıllarda yapılan restorasyon uygulamaları yerinde gözlemlenmiş ve fotoğraflarla belgelenmiştir. Çalışma kapsamında yapının tarihçesi ve mimari özellikleri tanımlanmış, bozulma ve onarımlar tarihî süreç içerisinde ele alınmış ve Türkiye’deki koruma anlayışının değişimi ile gelişimi Eski Cami örneği üzerinden değerlendirilmiştir.
