Harper Lee’nin Bülbülü Öldürmek Eserine Tematik Bakış: Adalet Temasının Karakterler Üzerinde Etkisi

Abstract

Harper Lee’nin 1960 yılında kaleme aldığı Bülbülü Öldürmek isimli eserinde yazar, Jean Louise Finch karakterinin yaşadığı olayları Finch’in kendi ağzından geriye dönüş anlatım tekniği ile anlatır. Roman, yazarın Amerika'nın Alabama eyaletinde, kurmaca bir mekan olarak eserine yerleştirdiği Maycomb kasabasında geçer. Romanda Scout ve Jem Finch’in avukat olan babası Atticus Finch’in, tecavüz iftirasına uğramış Tom Robinson davasını alması ile olaylar gelişir. Yazar, kurguda Tom Robinson davasının kaybedilmesi sonucu, süreci mahkemede ve mahallede geçirmiş çocuklar ve yetişkinler için toplumsal bir bilinç oluşturur. Lee, yaşanılan bu adaletsizliği, çeşitli tasvirler eşliğinde okura aktarır. Kurmaca ile Amerika tarihinde yaşanmış olayları aynı eksende birleştirerek okura geniş bir bakış açısı sunar. Bildungsroman türü olarak nitelendirilen eser, adalet teması üzerine Scout başta olmak üzere kolektif bir gelişim sunar. Böylelikle, Bülbülü Öldürmek, edebiyatın sosyolojik alanlarda eğitici bir metin olma görevini ortaya koyar, Atticus Finch'in ahlaki ve hukuki meydan okumalarını kullanarak mahkeme sistemini ve toplumsal ön yargıları eleştirel bir şekilde okura sunar. Bu araştırma makalesi boyunca Bülbülü Öldürmek eserinde adalet kavramının kullanımının anlatısal ve yazınsal önemine değinilecektir. Eserde Atticus Finch, çocuk karakterler, dönem, edebi tür ve sembollerin adalet temasını aktarmadaki rolü aktarılacaktır. Bu sebeplerle bu makalede, Lee’nin romanda konu edindiği adalet teması, karakterlerin adalet kavramına bakış açısı çerçevesinde ele alınacaktır.

Thematic Overview of Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird: The Effect of the Concept of Justice on the Characters

Abstract

Harper Lee wrote her novel To Kill a Mockingbird in 1960. The author narrates the events experienced by the character Jean Louise Finch in Finch's own words using the flashback narrative technique. The novel takes place in Maycomb, a fictional town in the American state of Alabama. In the novel, events unfold when Scout and Jem Finch's lawyer father, Atticus Finch, takes on the case of Tom Robinson who is accused of rape. Lee offers the reader a broad perspective by combining fiction with real events in American history on the same axis. To Kill a Mockingbird proves to be an educational text as it explores Atticus Finch's moral and legal challenges to depict the court system and societal biases critically. The work, described as a Bildungsroman, presents the reader with the theme of justice, particularly focusing on Scout. Moreover, the work explores the role of Atticus Finch, child characters, literary genre, and symbols in conveying the theme of justice. Thus, in this article, the theme of justice that Lee addresses in the novel will be discussed within the framework of the characters' perspective on the concept of justice.
