Abstract
The first Turkish association of the veterinary profession, namely, the
“Osmanlı Cemiyet-i İlmiye-i Baytariyesi” (Ottoman Scientific Society for
Veterinary Medicine), was founded on 26th August 1908, in Istanbul. The
periodical issued by this Society, the Mecmua-i Fünûn-i Baytariye (Journal of
Veterinary Sciences), is the first scientific veterinary journal devoted to issues
related to the veterinary profession and the livestock sector. Twenty four issues
were published from September 1908 to April 1910. The publishing of the journal
was aimed at contributing to the prevention of animal diseases, the improvement of
the veterinary profession, and animal husbandry activities. The journal includes not
only scientific articles published in the veterinary field, but also information on the
scientific progress of the period. In this context, the journal sheds light on national
and international developments that occurred in the veterinary medicine at that time,
as well as on scientific research. Multiple issues relates to the livestock sector and
public health, veterinary education and training services and the organisation of the
veterinary profession. This study will discuss the Ottoman Scientific Society for
Veterinary Medicine and its periodical the “Journal of Veterinary Sciences”, and
will provide information on the articles published in the mentioned Journal.

Abstract
Türkiye’de veteriner hekimliği mesleğinin ilk derneği, Osmanlı Cemiyet-i
İlmiye-i Baytariyesi 26 Ağustos 1908 tarihinde İstanbul’da kurulmuştur. Derneğin
yayın organı olarak yayımlanan Mecmua-i Fünûn-i Baytariye, tümüyle veteriner
hekimliği ve hayvancılık konularını içeren bilimsel nitelikli ilk meslek dergisidir.
Eylül 1908 - Nisan 1910 tarihleri arasında toplam 24 sayısı yayımlanmıştır.
Derginin yayımlanmasında, hayvan hastalıklarının önlenmesi, veteriner hekimliğin
ve hayvancılığın geliştirilmesi amaçlanmıştır. Dergide veteriner hekimliği ile ilgili
alanlarda gerçekleştirilen araştırma makalelerinin yanı sıra dönemin bilimsel
gelişmelerine de yer verilmiştir. Bu özelliği ile dergi, veteriner hekimliğe ilişkin
ulusal ve uluslararası düzeydeki gelişmelere, bilimsel araştırmalara, hayvancılık ve
halk sağlığı konularına, veteriner hekimliği eğitim-öğretim hizmetleri ile
örgütlenmesine ışık tutmaktadır. Bu çalışmada Osmanlı Cemiyet-i İlmiye-i
Baytariyesi ve yayın organı Mecmua-i Fünûn-i Baytariye ele alınacak ve derginin
içeriğindeki makaleler hakkında bilgi verilecektir.
