Examining Refugee Memory with a Phenomenological Design: Syrian Refugees in Istanbul

Abstract

Focusing on Syrian refugees’ memories of their experiences as the main protagonists of the mass migration to Turkey due to the conflicts that started in 2011 and what shapes their memories, the present study examines t Syrian individuals’ memories using the phenomenological research design in terms of the refugee-memory relationship. The study interprets refugees’ relationship with memory though their experiences and explores the world of meaning. The study discusses the experiences and life practices of refugees within social frameworks as well as explaining how their individual and collective memories have been shaped and how their memories work. The study was carried out in Istanbul and uses the maximum variation and snowball sampling methods alongside the criterion sampling method in a non-probability purposive sampling. The data were collected by means of a semistructured interview form and observations with the 16 participants (7 females, 9 males) who’ve fled from Syrian city centers and rural areas. The data were analyzed in the package program MAXQDA after thematically coding the themes using exploratory analysis. Three themes emerged in the research findings: experienced memories, auditory memories, and dreams. The categories for the theme of experienced memories include experienced traumatic memories, memories from youth/adulthood, childhood memories, memories of traditions, memories of objects, and memories of smells. The categories for the theme of auditory memories involve heard traumatic memories and transferred memories. The theme of dreams has no categories. The memories of Syrian refugees living in Istanbul are observed to have been especially shaped by experienced traumatic memories and that their memories are transferred and reconstructed. Experienced traumatic memories also include other types of memories and are constantly reshaped through space and experiences. The study aims to bring a new perspective to memory discussions and Halbwachs’ theory of memory through the life experiences and practices of Syrian refugees.

Göçmen Hafızasının Fenomenolojik Desen ile İncelenmesi: İstanbul’daki Suriyeli Göçmenler

Abstract

2011’de başlayan çatışmalar nedeniyle Türkiye’ye yönelen kitlesel göçün ana kahramanları olan Suriyeli göçmenlerin hafıza deneyimleri ve göçmen hafızasını nelerin şekillendirdiğine dair yapılan bu çalışmada, Suriyeli bireylerin hafızası, göçmen-hafıza ilişkisi bağlamında fenomenolojik desen ile incelenmiştir. Göçmenlerin hafıza ile olan ilişkileri, yaşantıları üzerinden yorumlanmaya ve göçmenin anlam dünyası keşfedilmeye çalışılmıştır. Göçmenlerin deneyimleri ve yaşam pratikleri toplumsal çerçeveler üzerinden ele alınarak, bireysel ve toplumsal hafızalarının nasıl şekillendiği ve hafızalarının işleyiş biçimi açıklanmıştır. İstanbul’da gerçekleştirilen bu araştırmada, olasılıklı olmayan amaçlı örneklem içerisinde maksimum çeşitlilik ve kartopu yöntemi, ölçüt örneklemle beraber kullanılmıştır. Veriler, Suriye’nin şehir merkezlerinden ve kırsalından göç etmiş 7 kadın, 9 erkek olmak üzere 16 katılımcı ile yarı yapılandırılmış görüşme formu ve gözlem kullanılarak toplanmıştır. Veriler keşfedici analiz yöntemiyle tematik kodlama sonrası MAXQDA paket programında analiz edilmiştir. Araştırma bulgularında yaşanan hafıza, işitilen hafıza ve rüyalar olmak üzere üç tema ortaya çıkmıştır. Yaşanan hafızanın kategorileri; yaşanan travmatik hafıza, gençlik/yetişkinlik hafızası, çocukluk hafızası, gelenek hafızası, nesne hafızası ve koku hafızasıdır. İşitilen hafıza temasının kategorileri; işitilen travmatik hafıza ve aktarılan hafızadır. Rüyalar teması kategori içermemektedir. İstanbul’da yaşayan Suriyeli göçmenlerin hafızasını özellikle travmatik hafızanın şekillendirdiği ve hafızanın taşınıp yeniden inşa edildiği görülmüştür. Travmatik hafıza, içerisinde diğer hafıza çeşitlerini de barındırmakta, mekân ve yaşantılar üzerinden sürekli yeniden biçimlendirilmektedir. Araştırma; hafıza tartışmaları ve Halbwachs’in hafıza kuramına Suriyeli göçmenlerin yaşam deneyimleri ve pratikleri üzerinden yeni bir bakış açısı getirmeyi amaçlamaktadır.
