<p>Meddah (storyteller-eulogist) tradition, a prominent form of solo performance within Turkish literature and culture, involves narrating stories enriched with humorous elements, either directly or through imitations. Its historical roots, observable under various names across different cultural contexts where narrative arts have flourished, parallel the broader evolution of oral storytelling traditions. Nonetheless, narrative forms have been distinctly shaped by historical periods, religious beliefs, and cultural interactions, resulting in unique adaptations within each cultural milieu. In Turkish culture, the meddah tradition evolved from the minstrel heritage, which itself emerged from the specialization within shamanic practices. This evolution led to a distinctively Anatolian form characterized by the incorporation of humor and engagement with local, everyday themes. In contrast, in Iranian culture, despite clear conceptual similarities and mutual religious and cultural influences, the meddah tradition predominantly took on a dramatic and religious character, profoundly influenced by Shiism. This study aims to offer a novel comparative analysis of the Turkish and Iranian meddah traditions, examining their origins, historical developments, and transformations. To achieve this, textual analyses were conducted for the Turkish tradition, while a combination of fieldwork and textual research was employed for the Iranian tradition. Consequently, this study highlights important semantic shifts and historical trajectories within both cultures. Among the key findings is the critical role that the separation of dramatic and humorous elements plays in altering not only the nature of the performance itself but also the roles of the performer, audience interaction, and accompanying accessories.</p></trans-abstract>
