Abstract
Taaccüb, in other words, being amazed is part of human nature. In order to express this feeling, unique patterns and concepts have been developed in each language. Such patterns are also quite common in the Arabic language. In this article, the phrases used by the Arabs for taaccüb are discussed. Many taaccüb expressions in the Arabic language have actually been developed by abstracting from its meaning and transforming it into a taaccüb expression. Such expressions are frequently encountered in hadith texts and classical Arabic literature, but their meanings are ignored and a wrong translation is made. In our article, information is given on how to make the correct translation by handling such expressions.
In the determination of the expressions used for taaccüb in the Arabic language, the reflections of these uses in classical Arabic poems and hadith texts were examined by frequently using the work of Ibn Sîde's (d. 458/1066) el-Muhkem ve’l-muhîtü’l-aʿzam. In this context, examples from poems and hadiths are given for many uses. We hope that our article will fill a gap and gain new horizons in understanding and conveying such terms correctly.
