Abstract

Abstract

Due to growing automotive industry, increasing population, the demand on vehicle ownership, there is an obvious increasing in number of vehicle introducing to traffic. Pavement constructed with conventional bitumen cannot meet the desired structural and functional performance under the hard traffic loads and environmental conditions. To provide the desired performance and to improve the bitumen characteristics, bitumen are modified with numerous natural, waste and commercially produced additives. The bitumen in class of 70/100 penetration grade was modified with Polyphosphoric Acid (PPA) in six different rates range between 0.5% and 5.0%. Softening point, penetration and Brookfield viscometer tests at four different temperatures were applied on bitumen samples. Dynamic Shear Rheometer test was conducted to find out complex modulus and phase angle of base, modified and short-term aged bitumen samples. In addition, the thermal sensitivities of bitumen were figure out by penetration index and mixing and compaction temperatures of bitumen samples were determined with the results of rotational viscometer test results. As a results PPA additive changes the physical and rheological properties, significantly. Softening point and viscosity of bitumen increases, while that of penetration and thermal sensitivity decreases. The rheological assessment done with DSR test showed that the rutting resistance of bitumen increases with PPA addition.
