Abstract
Aim: This study aims to determine breast problems in mothers with their babies in neonatal intensive care units.
Methodology: The study data has been collected at a training and research hospital in Istanbul between 25/06/2018 and 10/09/2018. The sample of the study has consisted of 111 mothers with babies in neonatal intensive care units. The study data has been collected through a questionnaire form prepared by the relevant researchers in accordance with the literature. A software package known as NCSS 2007 has been used for statistical analyses. In the analysis of the study data, the percentage test, Student’s t-test, Pearson’s Chi-square test, Fisher-Freeman-Halton test and Fisher’s exact test have been used.
Findings: It has been found that 64.9% of mothers with babies in neonatal intensive care units have breast problems. When the relevant problems were examined, it has been determined that the main problem is breast pain (91.7%), and that 52.8% of them had a massage to eliminate their breast problems. Any statistically significant difference has not been found between receiving a training on breast milk and breastfeeding during pregnancy and postpartum period and having a breast problem (p>0.05).
Conclusion: It has been found that the rate of breast problems in mothers with babies in neonatal intensive care units is high. For this reason, postpartum breast problems should be diagnosed early, and midwives/nurses who work in this field should manage the process of problem solving effectively and sufficiently.
