Physiological changes observed during sleep in the elderly predispose to sleep disorders. Common sleep disorders in the elderly include insomnia, obstructive sleep apnea syndrome, circadian rhythm sleep-wake disorders, REM sleep behavior disorder, restless legs syndrome, and hypersomnia. The first step in observing sleep disorders in the elderly is to educate the individual on sleep hygiene. Non-pharmacological treatment approaches should be prioritized. For pharmacological treatments, the general principles of small doses, slow increases, and short-term use are recommended for the elderly.
</trans-abstract>

Yaşlılarda uyku bozuklukları varlığında ilk yapılması gereken uyku hijyeni konusunda kişiye eğitim vermektir. Farmakolojik olmayan tedavi yaklaşımları öncelikli değerlendirilmelidir.
