Understanding social loafing behaviors in group settings a study on undergraduate students in the department of tourism guidance

Abstract

This study aims to examine the prevalence of social loafing behaviors among undergraduate students enrolled in the Tourism Guidance program at the Faculty of Tourism, Pamukkale University, within the context of group work. It further explores the impact of these behaviors on group dynamics and investigates students’ perceptions of social loafing. Additionally, the study seeks to assess students' attitudes toward social loafing and their expectations of academic staff in addressing this issue. Employing a quantitative research design, primary data were collected from a sample of 203 students selected through simple random sampling. The findings indicate that informants demonstrated a moderate level of social loafing, which correspondingly exerted a moderate effect on group performance. These outcomes have notable implications for workload distribution, time management, and overall group efficiency.
