The Journal of Multidisciplinary Academic Tourism (JOMAT) attaches great importance to ethical principles, transparency, and academic responsibility in scientific publishing. This policy has been prepared to establish principles and rules regarding the use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) and AI-supported tools in studies submitted to the journal. The policy covers authors, reviewers, and editors and is binding in JOMAT's publication processes.
Artificial intelligence tools are not accepted as authors or co-authors in JOMAT. The intellectual content, methodology, analysis, results, and ethical compliance of a scientific study are entirely the responsibility of human authors. Artificial intelligence tools cannot assume academic responsibility, be used as decision-makers, or be credited as contributors to scientific work. Even if artificial intelligence is used, any errors, omissions, or ethical violations arising from the content of the work are the responsibility of the authors.
Authors may only use artificial intelligence or AI-assisted tools as aids and under human supervision. Technical and supportive uses, such as grammar and spelling corrections, improving the flow of the text, structural editing, and error checking in code or statistical analyses, are acceptable provided they are declared transparently. However, artificial intelligence cannot be used to replace the author's original scientific contribution. Text generation, method design, interpretation of findings, and scientific conclusions cannot be left directly to artificial intelligence; in such cases, the ultimate responsibility always lies with the authors.
Directly presenting content generated by artificial intelligence without human contribution, using fabricated or unverifiable information, creating fictitious or false sources, and using artificial intelligence in place of scientific literature is strictly prohibited. Generative artificial intelligence tools are not accepted as scientific sources and cannot be included in the reference list. Outputs obtained from artificial intelligence can only be disclosed within the scope of a declaration of use; all scientific claims in the work must be supported by reliable and verifiable academic sources.
If artificial intelligence or AI-supported tools have been used in submitting an article, the corresponding author is obliged to clearly declare this. JOMAT requires a mandatory “Artificial Intelligence Usage Statement” for this purpose. The statement must clearly specify the name of the tools used, their purpose, and scope. Incomplete, incorrect, or misleading statements are considered ethical violations and may be subject to editorial sanctions.
In terms of images, tables, and figures, materials that are entirely generated by artificial intelligence and presented as research findings are not accepted. However, if artificial intelligence has been used solely for technical improvement purposes (e.g., noise reduction, resolution enhancement, or readability adjustments), this must be clearly stated in the methods or supplementary information section. Artificial intelligence cannot be used to generate data or create visual content that represents research results.
There are also clear limits on the use of artificial intelligence for reviewers and editors. Blinded article texts, reviewer reports, and personal data in the review process cannot be uploaded to third-party artificial intelligence tools. Generative artificial intelligence cannot be used to write referee reports, justify acceptance or rejection decisions, or perform editorial evaluations. Only very limited technical support (e.g., language checking) may be obtained from artificial intelligence in editorial processes, and this use must not violate the principle of confidentiality.
JOMAT does not base its assessments regarding AI usage solely on automated detection tools. In suspicious cases, authors may be asked to provide additional explanations, information about the tools used, or details of the usage process. If a policy violation is detected, the editorial board reserves the right to request revisions, reject the article, or, where necessary, apply post-publication corrections or retractions.
This Artificial Intelligence Policy may be updated in line with ethical standards in scientific publishing and technological developments. The current policy text is published on the journal's official website and is binding for all stakeholders.
