Instructions for Authors

Guide for the Authors, for Journal of the Turkish Chemical Society, Section A: Chemistry (JOTCSA)

The journal management requires that all authors (not only the corresponding author) register to ORCID at https://orcid.org/register and get a free ORCID ID. The registration process takes about only a minute. The corresponding author will complete the document of ORCID ID and e-mail addresses for editorial use.

We prefer that the authors use "Zotero" (https://www.zotero.org/, free of charge) or "Endnote" (https://www.endnote.com/, commercial), or similar online software like Mendeley (https://www.mendeley.com/?interaction_required=true, free of charge), for the generation of bibliographic list and citations. We are using the "Vancouver" citation style, which is available in all softwares cited. The length of articles (except for Letters to the Editor, which tends to be much shorter than a normal research article) cannot exceed 40 printed A4 pages.

We are using iThenticate plagiarism solution and our maximum allowed score, for the document is 30%. Higher scores are not allowed and the author will be given the plagiarism report and the manuscript will be returned to the authors.

Please do not send PDF copies of your articles for preliminary control. We accept Microsoft DOC, Microsoft DOCX, OpenOffice ODT, and LibreOffice ODT. We directly work on the manuscript, forming changes that are trackable.

Please do not submit your work again if the management requires that you prepare a newer version. Just browse to your existing submission and use the upload module to upload the newer version. If you are stuck, please send the revised article with e-mail to the managing editor at jotcsa@turchemsoc.org.

Our journal will use a manual heading-based system without numbers. Just arrange the following items as described below:

You may download the article template here.

Article template

Title: Verdana, 12 points, boldface, the first letter of each word is capitalized (except for the words which must be lowercase like Latin names for bacteria or plants, etc.). The paragraph spacing is, like every other part of the manuscript, is 1.5 pt.

Author names, affiliations: Verdana, 10 pt, 1.5 paragraph spacing, regular typeface. Use superscripted Arabic numbers to differentiate between the author's affiliations, placed just after the last name.

E-mail addresses: Provide an e-mail address for the corresponding author. Authors may add telephone and fax numbers if they desire. In the metadata area, please give all the e-mail addresses of authors (not only the corresponding author).

Abstract: Verdana, 10 points, boldface, 1.5 paragraph spacing. The abstract text goes right after the title.

Keywords: Verdana, 10 points, regular typeface, 1.5 paragraph spacing. The number of keywords will be 3 (minimum) and 5 (maximum).

INTRODUCTION: Verdana, 10 points, boldface. As for all first-level headings, the heading will be capitalized. And allow one space before and after the first-grade heading.

For second-grade headings, the title will be sentence case (the first letter capitalized, the others are lowercase), space is left before the heading, and 10 pt Verdana, and boldface. No space is placed between the title and text.

For third-grade headings, the title will again be sentence case. The title will not be boldface and it is italicized. Space is left before the title and no spaces are left after the title.

In our journal, fourth and later grade headings are not used. If the author feels that it is required, he/she just arranges a title and does not leave a space before or after the title, then uses a colon (:) and continues the text.

The article text will be Verdana, 10 pt.

MATERIAL AND METHODS: Verdana, 10 point, boldface.

If desired, the "Chemicals and Apparatus" title may be used where needed. This title will also be Verdana, 10 pt, and boldface. There will be a blank line preceding the title. The text will be Verdana 10 pt.

The tables will be 9 points. Verdana again will be used as the typeface. All kinds of borders are allowed, but the table will be reformatted in Microsoft Word. If necessary, the character size in the table may be lowered to 8 pt.

Schemes usually used for reactions and related material will use Verdana, preferably at 9 or 10 points, inside the figures. Directly pasting from the drawing application into the word processor software is NOT recommended. Please use the "paste special" feature to paste it as an image (metafile pictures are strongly recommended).

Citing: Our journal uses a number-based reference system, and the number is given in normal parenthesis like (18). Please search for similar articles in JOTCSA and cite them as well.

Proton or carbon nuclear magnetic resonance data will be given like this:

1H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3, delta, ppm): 7.53-7.47 (2H, m, Ar-H), 7.42-7.35 (3H, m, Ar-H), 5.54 (1H, s, PhCH-), 4.80 (1H, d, J = 4.0 Hz, H-1), 4.30 (1H, dd, J = 9.7 and 4.4 Hz, H-6a), 3.94 (1H, dd, J = 9.3 and 9.2 Hz, H-3), 3.82 (1H, ddd, J = 10.3, 9.2 and 4.4 Hz, H-5), 3.75 (1H, dd, J = 10.3 and 9.7 Hz, H-6b), 3.64 (1H, dd, J = 9.2 and 4.0 Hz, H-2), 3.50 (1H, dd, J = 9.3 and 9.2 Hz, H-4), 3.47 (3H, s, OCH3). 13C NMR (100 MHz, CDCl3): δ 137.1 (Ar-C), 129.3, 128.3, 126.3 (Ar-CH), 102.0 (PhCH-), 99.7 (C-1), 80.8 (C-4), 72.9 (C-2), 71.9 (C-3), 68.9 (C-6), 62.4 (C-5), 55.6 (OCH3). To make it short, the elements which are subject to NMR spectrum and the J coupling constant will be italicized. If desired, the full spectra may be given as supplementary at the end of the article.

The words Scheme 1, Figure 1, etc., will have a full stop at the end of the caption. The caption text will be centered on the page.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: Verdana, 10 pt, bold typeface will be used. After a blank line, the article text will be Verdana, 10 pt, regular and 1.5 paragraph spacing. The preceding and succeeding lines will be blank, too.

The title "CONCLUSION" will be placed around here.

The title "ACKNOWLEDGMENTS" will be 10 points, Verdana, and boldface.

REFERENCES title will also be Verdana, 10 points, and boldface. The reference list will be arranged with Zotero or Endnote, or a similar software according to "Vancouver" reference style. Simply put, you will add the references into the reference software by using DOI names or directly entering into the software, and export as “Vancouver”. The reference list will be 10 pt, Verdana, left-aligned and 1.5 pt-spaced. Adding short DOI names (such as 10.1016/jpp.01.02.03) to the reference items is recommended.

Guidelines for the other types of references can be found in Zotero or Endnote software.

Citation of existing literature in JOTCSA: Please conduct a search in the existing volumes and issues of JOTCSA and try to cite the existing works as many as possible. This will be required to have a medium to high impact factor when we apply the science citation index (SCI). Thank you for your cooperation.

Image quality

Please provide ALL images, at a minimum resolution of 250 dots per inch (DPI). Images will have a width of 15 centimeters at the maximum. You can download IRFANVIEW software, available at https://www.irfanview.com/, free of charge. Some advanced manipulations can be performed with the GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP), freely available at https://www.gimp.org/. Please bear in mind to paste special images like JPEG to reduce the size of the manuscript file.

Supplementary information

The authors are encouraged to use supplementary information, at the end of the article, for detailing the study with spectral data, crystal structure refinement data, and other types of material should you recommend to include. All types of synthetic procedures will be included in the main text. Supplementary files take different page numbers than the original article, i.e. they start with 1.

Usage of the units

The units will be, where possible, SI-based and the style g/mL will be preferred over g.mL-1. Please do not mix these two and be consistent throughout the manuscript about using the units.

Publication ethics: It is imperative that the authors comply with national and international ethical rules in research and writing the article. More information can be found at http://publicationethics.org/resources/guidelines.

You can submit your works and work with the editorial staff. You are free to receive new issue alerts and read the contents. This open-access chemical journal can be added to your list of journals, and you can help us with the policies we are using in order to create a perfect example of open access publishing. We will publish the journal triannually, every February, June, and October. There are plans to increase the frequency in 8(1) and onward.

Our open-access policy is quite straightforward. No one should access a scholarly paper by paying money. All scholarly activities should be free to download, read, and cite.

Open Access Journals are very nice examples of this philosophy, and their most valued and important asset is the presence of a strong peer-reviewing medium. Without this, an open-access journal would quickly turn into garbage.

We, managers of this journal, will keep the importance of peer-review in mind, and use this asset as much as possible, in order to make the readers meet the authors.

No private information, including the e-mails, names, or affiliations, will be shared outside this open-access journal system.

Authors who publish with this journal agree to the following terms:

Authors bestow the copyright to the journal at the first publication with the work simultaneously licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution License that allows others to share the work with an acknowledgment of the work's authorship and initial publication in this journal. The journal only allows others to download the works appeared in the journal and share them with others as long as they credit the journal, but they can not change them in any way or use them commercially.

Copyright: Our journal has adopted the CC-BY-NC-ND policy and has started accepting articles under this definition. Also, please read our copyright terms from the copyright transfer form.

The copyeditor will investigate the article and use a separate list of the changes to be made. The resultant document will be converted into a PDF file and submitted to the journal website. The authors will work on their copies to follow the changes and will correct them if they agree with the copyeditor.

Information e-mail: All authors are kindly informed that if they send an e-mail to the editorial office (jotcsa@turchemsoc.org), their situations will be investigated at once and if possible, their requests will be dealt accordingly. So please send an e-mail if you think something is not right.
