Emily Dickinson is one of the most famous poets of nineteenth-century American literature. Although she is remembered as an American woman poet who wore white and locked herself in her room and wrote poems, Dickinson also inspired other poets in American literature with her poetry. In addition, her support for the feminist women's movement that emerged in the nineteenth century is evident in her poetry. Themes such as identity, self-expression, and social expectations are prominent throughout her poetry. However, the aim of this article is to examine how Dickinson's poetry, with reference to the feminist movement that emerged in the nineteenth century, attempts to subvert gender roles through the language she uses in her poetry, her harsh criticism of the traditional institution of marriage, and finally, how the tasks attributed to women and perceived by the patriarchal order as “unimportant” household chores are transformed into creative acts by women. In addition, as Dickinson exemplifies many times in her poems, tasks such as sewing and embroidery, which are considered unimportant or despised by patriarchal male discourse, appear in her poems as one of the most important examples of women's creative power and the power to make something out of nothing. In conclusion, this article aims to analyze Dickinson's unique observation of women's culture and her unique reflection on nineteenth-century gender roles in her poetry.
Emily Dickinson on dokuzuncu yüzyıl Amerikan edebiyatının en ünlü şairlerinden biridir.
