Abstract

This editorial book takes Istanbul, the capital of the Ottoman Empire, as its center and examines how different diplomatic cultures interacted with one another in the period between c. 1500-1630. It explores the diplomatic relations of both ad hoc embassies to Istanbul and resident ambassadors from various states or polities from Europe, Asia, and Africa with the Ottoman authorities. This examination makes significant contributions to the history of early modern diplomacy in general and Ottoman diplomacy in particular, rendering the book a reference source for diplomatic history.

Osmanlı Devleti’nin başkenti İstanbul’u merkeze alarak yaklaşık 1500-1630 seneleri arasında dönemin farklı diplomatik kültürlerinin nasıl etkileşime geçtiğini inceleyen bu editoryal kitap Avrupa, Asya ve Afrika kıtalarındaki çeşitli devletlerden veya siyasi yapılardan İstanbul’a gelen elçilik heyetleri veya o devletlerin İstanbul’daki daimî elçiliklerinin diplomatik ilişkilerini ele almaktadır. Kitabın farklı diplomatik alanları ve dönemleri irdeleyen ve alanında uzman isimlerce yazılmış bölümleri, genelde erken modern diplomasi tarihine, özelde Osmanlı diplomasi tarihine önemli katkılar sunarak, kitaba mevzubahis alanlar için bir referans kaynak olma hüviyeti kazandırmaktadır.
