<p>This study investigates students’ experiences and the learning strategies they use while memorizing piano pieces. It examines their perspectives on study planning, time management, memorization techniques, challenges encountered and coping strategies. Designed as a case study, the research collected data through semi-structured interviews with volunteer undergraduate students enrolled in piano lessons. The findings reveal that most students adopt a flexible and unstructured practice routine. They analyze the pieces by focusing on bar structure, rhythm, thematic material, and fingerings, and they practice at a slower tempo with frequent repetitions to achieve performance fluency. During the memorization process, students primarily rely on visual memory to mentally represent the score and kinesthetic memory to strengthen finger coordination. To monitor their progress, they record their performances and practice without sheet music, while consistent repetition helps consolidate memorization. Additionally, both mental preparation, such as clearing the mind, and physical preparation, such as arranging an effective practice environment, were found to support the process. The most common difficulties reported were attention lapses and technical challenges, which students addressed by dividing pieces into smaller sections or taking short breaks. Overall, the findings underscore the critical role of learning strategies and self-regulation skills in the successful memorization of piano repertoire.</p></trans-abstract>
