Demirkapi (Irongate) is a defile that devides the lower section and the middle section of Danube River just like a knot. Once the Ottoman Empire conquered the area and take Demirkapi district in her hands, she establish an organization called Girdab Ağalığı. With this organization the Ottoman Empires aim was to make ships pass the defile easier. The organization has been lost most of her efficieny during XVIII. century.
Demirkapı Avrupanın en önemli suyollarından Tuna Nehrini düğümleyen üç adet girdabı bünyesinde bulunduran dar bir boğazdır. Osmanlı Devleti Demirkapı yöresini ele geçirdikten sonra gemilerin boğazdan geçişlerini kolaylaştırmak için Girdab Ağalığı adı verilen bir kurum kurmuştur. Bu kurum XVIII. yüzyıl itibariyle işlevselliğini yitirmeye başlamıştır.
