The aim of this research was to explore the perceptions of the Turkish children living
in Germany towards Turkish, learning and using Turkish. Qualitative method was used to
describe the children’s opinions for in depth study. The research was conducted via purposeful
sampling method and the population of the study consisted of total 31 students. The data were
collected via semi-structured interviews and content analysis was carried out.
The results of the study revealed that most of the students who participated in the study
spoke German or mostly German and half-German half-Turkish in non-school settings and in
the school except for the course hours, they read more books written in German in addition to
their course books and they watched Turkish television channels a lot . Furthermore, it was
found that nearly all the children liked Turkish courses and they liked reading course books
written in Turkish, and more than half of them considered that it was necessary to learn Turkish,
more than half of them found Turkish easy to learn, and half of them thought that they knew
Turkish well.
