A Study on Virtual Pilgrimage Practices in the Catholic Church

Abstract

The twenty-first century has witnessed a rapid digitalization process as the internet has permeated every aspect of social life, bringing about a fundamental transformation in worship and accessibility to sacred places. The transfer of pilgrimage—traditionally centered on the body and place—to virtual environments is a concrete manifestation of this shift. This study examines virtual pilgrimage practices in the Catholic Church and investigates how digitalization transforms the practice of pilgrimage. The research analyzes virtual pilgrimage applications at Lourdes and Fátima, which are among the major pilgrimage centers of the Catholic Church, and addresses the position, legitimacy, and emerging issues of virtual pilgrimage within the Catholic pilgrimage tradition. In doing so, the study aims to develop a comprehensive framework for understanding the transformative effects of digitalization on the perception of sacred space and pilgrimage practice in the Catholic Church. The research employs a qualitative case study design, integrating documentary analysis of virtual tours, live broadcasts, and VR applications, as well as official Church documents and academic literature. The data were analyzed descriptively, focusing on the dimensions of pilgrimage: place, time, body, and community. Findings indicate that the Catholic Church’s approach to virtual pilgrimage has been shaped primarily by pastoral needs under extraordinary circumstances. It has also been observed that virtual pilgrimage practices are legitimized through reference to the medieval tradition of symbolic pilgrimage; however, digital tools significantly transform the structure of the ritual and the effects of worship. The study concludes that virtual pilgrimage is neither merely a supplementary tool for traditional pilgrimage nor a simple extension of medieval symbolic traditions; rather, it represents a distinct mode of worship precipitated by digitalization. Ultimately, however, virtual pilgrimage fails to replicate the existential depth and spiritual resonance inherent in the embodied, physical experience of traditional pilgrimage.
