Solo viola is an instrument, which achieved individuality later than the other modern
string instruments. Because of the late start of the viola education, formation of the
original viola repertoire was delayed. In this article, Lillian Fuchs’ life, her compositions
for the viola, her personality as an important viola player and composer were discussed.
Two selected studies from 16 Fantasy Etudes were analyzed as pedagogically to determine
their contribution to viola repertoire. It is aimed to create a resource for viola students,
teachers and artists. Fuchs’ works are considered important, inasmuch as they can be
alternative of the methods and studies, which are usually composed for violin and studied
by violists. Books, sheet music, articles and written materials on the internet were used
as sources. As a result, it has been reached that Lillian Fuchs’ works, which were created
for viola, constitute an important resource in terms of improving both left and right-hand
techniques and also can improve student’s musical skills.
