Patients with life-threating conditions and in need of respiratory and/or circulatory support should follow up in Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Therefore cost of patient care, medication and medical equipments are higher in ICU than other departments of hospital. It is clear that cost analysis of ICU would help financial control and maintainability of university hospitals. The aim of this study is to determine cost of medication and medical equipments of patients who admitted to Kocaeli University Adult Internal Intensive Care Unit and compare this cost to medication and medical equipments proportion in actual repayment made by Social Security Institution (SSI). Patient care, medication and medical equipment costs are important expenses in ICU. Standardized repayment from SSI regardless of the quality of care may cause important finacial loss in this unit and does not substitute the costs of medication and medical equipments. It is suggested that an arrengement that allows invoicing of medications with higher prices yet vital for patients in ICU would be a solution for this situation.
