A Socio-Demographic Analysis of the Suicide Attempters Among Turkish Immigrants in Europe

Abstract

Objective:There are studies revealing thatcharacteristics of suicide behavior in immigrantsresemble to their country of origin or are converging to their new country. This study compares the socio-demographic suicide relatedcharacteristics of Turkish immigrants in Europeto native Turkish suicide attempters. Method:Turkish suicide attempters in Europe were compared to native Turkish suicide attempters usingthe data pool of WHO/EURO Multicentre Studyon Parasuicide. Results: Female/male rate islower, rates for being married are higher, education levels are lower, economic state is betterand psychotrop drug use is a more common suicide method in immigrant Turkish attempters.Discussion: The characteristics of immigrantTurkish suicide attempters may be convergingto characteristics in Europe

Abstract

Amaç:Göçmenlerin intihar davranış özelliklerinin doğdukları ülkelerdeki özelliklere benzediği ya da göç edilen ülkelerdeki özelliklerebenzediğini gösteren çalışmalar yapılmıştır. Buçalışmada Avrupa’daki göçmen Türklerin intihardavranışının özellikleri Türkiye’deki intihardavranış özellikleriyle karşılaştırılmıştır.Yöntem: Dünya Sağlık Örgütü’nün Avrupa ÇokMerkezli İntihar Çalışması’nın verileri üzerindenAvrupa’da intihar girişiminde bulunan Türkiyedoğumlu vakaların verileri Türkiye’deki intiharverileriyle karşılaştırılmıştır. Bulgular: Göçmenintihar girişimlerinde; kadın/erkek oranının dahadüşük, eğitim seviyesinin daha düşük, evlilikoranlarının daha yüksek ve ekonomik durumundaha iyi olduğu ve psikotrop ilaçlarla yapılangirişimlerin daha yaygın olduğu gözlenmiştir.Tartışma: Türk göçmenlerin intihar davranış özelliklerinin Avrupa’daki özelliklere yaklaştığı
söylenebilir.
