Students and teachers are faced with some problems in learning and teaching Turkish in public schools. It seems that the main problem in teaching and learning Turkish is related to Turkish curriculum and the planned activities of teaching and learning in the Turkish lessons. In order to overcome these problems there is a need to develop new strategies and use alternative theories. In recent years, the Turkish Ministry of National Education attempted to revise the Turkish curriculum. In addition to changes in curriculum, it is obvious that there is a need to make some changes in teaching activities and strategies in classroom settings. The purpose of this study was to discuss the role and importance of concept maps and related activities in both teaching and learning Turkish. Based on an extensive review of literature, recommendations and suggestions are developed for further study and practice in teaching and learning Turkish language.
