Trimethyl Borate [B(OCH3)3] Production Methods

Abstract

Trimethyl borate is primarily used in the production of alkaline metal borohydrides that are unique materials in their ability to carry large amounts of hydrogen, offering great potential as a fuel in fuel cells. It is also used as oil and lubricant additive, wood preservative, polymerization catalyst and in brazing and soldering flux, synthesis of higher borate esters, ceramics, organic synthesis, etc. and its production method is based on the reaction of either tincal, boric acid or boric oxide with methanol. In the production of trimethyl borate, due to the tendency of azeotrope formation, the product trimethyl borate is obtained in the form of trimethyl borate-methanol azeotrope. On the other hand, recoveries rarely exceed 80% and additional purification steps are required for the separation of methanol from the reaction medium to produce pure trimethyl borate. The purpose of this paper is to give information about the production and purification methods of trimethyl borate and trimethyl borate-methanol azeotrope

Abstract

Trimetil borat, çoğunlukla, önemli miktarda hidrojen depolama özelliği olan ve yakıt hücrelerinde kullanılma potansiyeli yüksek olan alkali metal borhidrür bileşiklerinin üretiminde kullanılmaktadır. Ayrıca, hidrolik sıvı ve yağlayıcı maddelerde katkı, ahşap koruyucu, polimerizasyon katalizörü, kaynak işlemlerinde flaks, yüksek borat esterlerinin sentezi, seramik, organik sentezleme vb. amaçlarla da kullanılmakta ve üretim yöntemi tinkal, borik asit ya da bor oksitin metanol ile tepkimeye sokulması ilkesine dayanmaktadır. Trimetil borat üretim yöntemlerinde, azeotrop oluşma eğiliminden dolayı, saf trimetil borat yerine önemli ölçüde trimetil borat-metanol azeotropu oluşmaktadır. Ayrıca, endüstriyel ölçekte yapılan çalışmalarda üretim verimleri %80'i nadiren aşmakta ve metanolün ayrılarak saf trimetil borat eldesi için de çeşitli ilave yöntemlerin kullanılması gerekmektedir. Bu yazının amacı, trimetil borat ve trimetil borat-metanol azeotropunun üretim yöntemleri ve trimetil boratın saflaştırılması hakkında bilgi vermektir
