<p>OBJECTIVE: Colorectal cancers are the most common and usually mortal cancers among gastrointestinal tumors all over the world. Prognostic factors for the disease are extremely important in terms of postoperative follow-up and determination of oncological treatment options. Recently, the effects of neutrophil/lymphocyte and lymphocyte/monocyte ratios, which are markers associated with inflammation, on the prognosis of colorectal cancers have been investigated. In this study, our aim is to evaluate whether the neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio before surgical treatment can be used in determining the prognosis of colorectal cancer.MATERIAL AND METHODS: Between January 2015 and January 2020, 102 patients who were operated for colorectal cancer in our center were evaluated retrospectively. The patients were divided into two groups as those with a neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio below 2 and above 2 before surgical treatment. Demographic characteristics, tumor localization, histological type, tumor stage, tumor differentiation and mortality rates in the first year after surgery were compared between these two groups.RESULTS: 60 (58.8%) were male and 42 (41.2%) were female of the patients. The mean age of the patients was 65.8 ± 12.9 years. Mortality was observed in 12 (11.8%) patients in the first postoperative year. Mortality was statistically higher in patients with a preoperative neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio above 2.CONCLUSION: We think that pre-treatment neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio can be used as a prognostic factor in patients undergoing surgical treatment for colorectal cancer.</p></trans-abstract>
