The use of videos in education has a long history, andthere are a number of ways, in which they can be used in teaching and learninglanguages. Developments in digital technologies now add to this versatility inlanguage education. One such development is the use of interactive videos.However, interactive videos are rarely used in instructional contexts despitetheir potential benefits. A possible reason for this is that this innovativetool is hardly known in the field. Therefore, this study discusses thepotential affordances of adding interactivity to video lectures or any videothat can be used in a language classroom. Once equipped with interactiveelements, videos can function as instructional tools by fulfilling variousfunctions, such as assessing students formatively, providing them instantfeedback, checking if students view videos at home for a flipped class,teaching vocabulary items in context and holding discussion sessions by usingvideos as an input. In addition, interactive videos can be used to monitorstudent responses to questions and their video-watching behavior through theuse of analytical tools that most interactive video platforms offer. Keepingsuch benefits in mind, this study reviews major tools used to add interactivityto videos on YouTube or similar platforms and compares them with respect to variouscriteria, such as the amount of interactivity provided, cost and so forth. Inaddition, interactive video tools are examined from a critical perspective witha focus on major benefits and drawbacks.
</trans-abstract>
