Aim: Postgraduate general practitioners from medical school are responsible for the assessment of the painful patient and the regulation of primary pain management. With this study, it was aimed to evaluate the knowledge about pain and its treatment of 5th grade students of Mersin University Faculty of Medicine before the Department of Anesthesiology and Reanimation internship with the "Preliminary Assessment Test”. Method: The results of 848 tests which were found to be completely filled, were evaluated retrospectively from the preliminary assessment test applied to the Mersin University Faculty of Medicine 5th grade students who attended to the Anesthesiology and Reanimation internship between 01/09/2012 and 01/01/2020. Assessment of pain, treatment methods for pain, the drugs used in pain treatment and the types of pain were the subjects included in the test. Respective data was presented based on descriptive statistics. Results: Only 85 (10.0%) of the students correctly marked the nerve fibers carrying the pain sensation. It was determined that only 57 (6.7%) of the students had knowledge about World Health Organization’s 'analgesic ladder'. The test number in which the routes of administration of opioids to the patient are known correctly was found to be 13 (1.5%). There were 200 (23.6%) students who correctly defined the Visual Analog Scale used to assess the patient's pain. Among the drugs used in the treatment of pain, 61 of the students (7.2%) gave the correct analgesic sample to those prescribed on green prescriptions, and 209 (24.6%) of those prescribed in red. In 59 (6.9%) of the responses, it was found that paracetamol and NSAI drugs were prescribed as examples of green and / or red prescriptions. Conclusion: We believe that a program in which pre-clinical pain teachings are correlated with clinical information should be created and this program should be developed with evaluations to be made between training periods and after the training is completed.
