In the 19th century, especially after the start of Tanzimat Period, modernization moves in the Ottoman Empire gained great momentum. With the newly established provincial administration system in this period, development initiatives by local administrative units accelerated as well. Starting from 1845, the development reports prepared by the zoning council in the Province of Konya proposed the projects of constructing Konya-Silifke-Taşucu Road and Taşucu Pier for the development of İçel Sanjak, which was then a part of Konya. Under these projects, it was also stated that the Stone Bridge in Silifke should be repaired. From 1848 to 1873, many exploratory surveys were conducted for the repair of the bridge and survey reports were prepared. These surveys were first carried out by Konya Province, however, after İçel Sanjak became a part of Adana Province in 1869, they started to be carried out by Adana Province. In survey reports, several different reparation costs were estimated. Finally, in 1873, the repairing began. After the bridge was repaired, it was also hoped that some other public works investments would be made in the town of Silifke such as building norias and fountains for water distribution to the town, constructing a slaughterhouse and a leather processing facility, building a new bazaar, paving the streets, and building a school. Since the financial power of both the Municipality of Silifke and the national government was insufficient for the construction of these facilities, a different solution was devised. With the permission of the government, commercial cars and animals crossing the Stone Bridge started to be charged a toll for a period of three years. As the planned facilities could not be completed in these three years, the tax collection period was extended further. Thus, a contribution was made to the development of Silifke with the income obtained from the bridge.
